While exploring Bruny Island, we made a quick stop at the Bruny Island Chocolate Company in Adventure Bay. It’s a small, charming roadside shop that’s perfect for a brief visit. Despite its size, the shop offers a delightful array of handmade chocolates and fudges.
We were in and out in about 10 minutes, picking up our favourites: a rich chocolate fudge and a bag of assorted chocolates. The selection includes treats like rocky road, chocolate-coated honeycomb, ginger, and various fudges such as hazelnut, mint, caramel, and even a unique Hounds Tooth Whisky blend.
Though there are no tastings or on-site demonstrations. It’s an ideal spot for a quick snack or to grab some sweet souvenirs. The shop also features a range of gift tins and locally made items, making it a convenient stop for those looking to take a piece of Bruny Island home.
Located at 55 Adventure Bay Road, the shop is open daily from 10β―am to 4β―pm.
We visited Bruny Island Honey in Great Bay, and it was such a delightful experience! The shop is beautifully decorated in cheerful yellow tones, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The shop may appear modest in size, but it’s impressively stocked with a wide variety of honey products. We were welcomed to sample different types of honey, including unique blends like Leatherwood and Manuka honeys. The tasting experience was both educational and enjoyable, allowing us to appreciate the distinct flavours of each variety.
In addition to honey, Bruny Island Honey also carries a range of natural products, including
Creamed Honey
Honeycomb
Honey with Ginger
Honey Mustard
Honey Ice Cream
Honey Mead
Honey & Eucalyptus Drops
Honey Bath Bombs
Beeswax Candles
Skincare Products (e.g., Manuka Body Lotion, Lemon Myrtle Hand Cream, Lip Balm)
One of the highlights was the observation hive, where we could watch bees at work. The display detailing the life cycle of bees was particularly fascinating, especially for the kids, who were captivated by the real-time view of the bees’ activities.
We also indulged in their honey ice cream, which was absolutely delicious, and kids also had honey lollipop. We also tried their creamed honey and other honey-infused products, all of which were delightful.
For families, there’s a lovely outdoor play area where children can have fun while adults explore the shop. It’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings.
If you’re on Bruny Island, I highly recommend stopping by Bruny Island Honey for a sweet and educational experience!
One of the most memorable parts of our Tasmania trip was the ferry ride to Bruny Island with SeaLink. The whole experience felt like the perfect start to a day of exploring. We booked our return car ticket online for around $46, which made things a bit easierβbut we still had to wait in the queue for nearly an hour before boarding, as it does get quite busy. A little patience goes a long way here!
As soon as we drove onto the ferry and stepped out of the car, the kids were buzzing with excitement. It felt so different from our usual drivesβopen air, fresh breeze, and the excitement of heading to an island. The view from the ferry was absolutely stunningβcalm blue waters, rolling hills in the distance, and seagulls soaring overhead.
We stood out on the deck, soaking in the peaceful scenery and cool sea air, chatting and taking in the moment. The kids were running from side to side, spotting boats, waving at other passengers, and just enjoying the whole vibe. It was such a wholesome moment for the family.
We were all excited knowing that once we arrived, a full day of island adventures awaited usβbeautiful beaches, wildlife, and great food. The ferry ride really set the tone for a fun and relaxed day on Bruny Island.
If you’re visiting Tasmania with family, we highly recommend taking the time to do this ferry trip. Itβs not just a way to get to the islandβitβs part of the experience!
Our recent family getaway to DoubleTree by Hilton was an absolute delight! From the moment we checked in, the little thoughtful touches made our stay so special. We were welcomed with a bottle of white sparkling wine and their signature warm cookies, which we couldnβt get enough of. We grabbed those cookies dailyβthey were always fresh, warm, and so satisfying.
The daily breakfast buffet was a highlight for all of us. The variety was incredibleβfluffy pancakes, fresh pastries, crispy bacon, made-to-order omelettes, fresh fruits, cereals, and even healthier options like avocado and granola. It felt like starting every morning with a feast, and it was perfect for fuelling our day.
The kids practically lived in the pool, splashing around and having a blast, while we loved unwinding in the sauna. It was the perfect way to relax after a day of exploring. The sauna was clean, spacious, and added such a luxurious feel to our stay.
The location of the hotel was another big win. Itβs close to the city, so we could easily walk to dinner each evening, exploring nearby restaurants and enjoying the lively atmosphere. The evening walks became a lovely part of our routine.
Our room was ideal for a family of fourβspacious, comfortable, and well-equipped. After full days of fun, the cosy beds ensured a great nightβs sleep. The staff were exceptionalβalways friendly, attentive, and ready to make our stay even better.
This trip was such a wonderful escape for us. It gave us the chance to slow down, connect as a family, and enjoy a mix of fun, relaxation, and delicious food. From the cookies to the breakfast buffet, the pool, sauna, and incredible service, DoubleTree by Hilton really made it feel like a home away from home.
If youβre planning a family getaway, we highly recommend this hotel. Weβll definitely be back to relive these amazing moments!
Our recent trip to Tasmania was an incredible journey filled with stunning landscapes, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences. A standout highlight was our visit to the iconic Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart. Having heard so many glowing reviews, we arrived with high expectations, and MONA delivered a fascinating, one-of-a-kind experience for the whole familyβalbeit with a few surprises along the way!
From the outside, MONA appears deceptively modest, with its sleek, modern, minimalist façade giving no indication of the vast world hidden beneath. Once inside, we were awestruck by the scale of the underground galleries. Spread across multiple levels, the museum feels like a labyrinth of creativity, with dark, winding pathways leading to a treasure trove of thought-provoking, boundary-pushing art.
The exhibits themselves were a mix of the strange, the beautiful, and the deeply intriguing. One of the standout installations was the βPulse Room,β a mesmerizing display of hanging light bulbs that pulse in time with the heartbeat of the participants. It was a captivating way to blend art and human connection. Another unforgettable piece was the βCloaca Professionalβ (often referred to as the “poo machine”)βa bizarre but oddly fascinating work that mimics the human digestive process. While itβs not for the faint-hearted, it certainly sparked some animated conversations with the kids, who were equal parts amused and bewildered!
The βWaterfallβ installation, which displays falling water droplets spelling out words and phrases, was another crowd favourite. It was stunning to watch and left us marveling at the creativity and technology behind it. We also explored the interactive βOβ device, which provides in-depth information about each artwork, allowing us to choose whether to dive deeper into the meaning of the pieces or simply appreciate them at face value.
Some exhibits, however, werenβt child-friendly due to mature or confronting themes. As parents, we made sure to guide our kids carefully and chose areas that felt suitable for them. Despite these limitations, MONA did an excellent job of offering an educational experience. Our children were surprisingly engaged, especially with the interactive features and the museum’s clever use of technology, like the augmented reality elements that added layers to the experience.
Once we were ready for a break, the outdoor areas provided the perfect opportunity to unwind. The kids, who had grown a bit restless indoors, were thrilled to discover the giant trampoline outside. They bounced with endless energy under the open sky, surrounded by MONAβs quirky sculptures and serene gardens. The outdoor spaces had a unique vibe, blending relaxation with a sense of playful exploration.
The museumβs practical features also enhanced the visit. Lockers to store our belongings made navigating the galleries much easier, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. However, we did find the food options somewhat underwhelming. While the on-site cafes had a decent selection, we expected something more creative and varied to match the museumβs bold reputation.
Admission was AUD 35 for adults, with free entry for children under 18, which we found to be excellent value considering the scale and uniqueness of the experience.
Overall, MONA was an unforgettable experience that added a distinct and unexpected flavour to our Tasmania trip. The museumβs blend of art, creativity, and innovation made for a truly memorable visit, while the outdoor play areas were a major highlight for the kids. Whether youβre an art enthusiast or just someone looking for a unique adventure, MONA offers something for everyoneβso long as you embrace the unexpected.
If youβre planning a trip to Tasmania, MONA should definitely be on your list. Just be prepared to balance the visit between family fun and exploring the art, and youβll have an amazing time!
