A Day to Remember: Exploring Bruny Island as a Family

During our trip to Tasmania, one of the absolute highlights was our visit to Bruny Island. As a family of four, with two excited kids in tow, we knew it was going to be a special day – but it turned out to be even better than we imagined!

The adventure began with the ferry ride to Bruny Island, and let me tell you, it was such a unique experience. Driving our car onto the ferry felt like a mini adventure on its own. The kids were thrilled to see the ocean around us as the ferry glided across the water. The fresh breeze and the excitement of what lay ahead made for the perfect start to our day.

Our first stop was Get Shucked, where we tried some of the freshest oysters ever. While the kids weren’t as enthusiastic about oysters (they gave it a brave try, though!), they loved watching us enjoy them. The relaxed vibe and delicious food set the tone for a day of indulgence and exploration.

Next, we headed to The Honey Pot to check out the famous Bruny Island honey. The kids loved sampling the honey varieties and learning about bees. It was such a sweet experience – literally! The honey ice cream we tried there was a massive hit, and it became one of those little treats we’ll remember forever.

Of course, no trip to Bruny Island would be complete without a stop at the Bruny Island Chocolate Company. The kids were in heaven here, picking out chocolates and trying the samples. The variety was incredible, and it was hard not to leave with bags full of goodies.

One of our favourite parts of the day was spending time at The Neck Lookout and Beach. The view from the lookout was breathtaking, with the stunning turquoise water stretching out before us. We felt so lucky to have a sunny day – the kind that makes everything sparkle a little brighter. We spent hours at the beach, dipping our toes in the water, and simply soaking up the sunshine. The kids didn’t want to leave, and honestly, neither did we!

On our way back, we stopped at famous bread fridge by the roadside to grab some freshly baked cookies. It was the perfect way to end our adventure – simple, warm, and oh-so-delicious.

Bruny Island was an incredible experience for all of us. It’s rare to find a place that balances natural beauty, fun activities, and delicious food so perfectly. We laughed, explored, indulged, and made memories that we’ll cherish forever.

If you’re planning a trip to Tasmania, Bruny Island is a must-visit. It’s one of those places that has something for everyone – whether you’re a foodie, an explorer, or simply looking to spend quality time with family. For us, it was the kind of day that reminded us why we love traveling together.

Highlights of Our Day:

  • Ferry ride with the car – such a fun start to the adventure!
  • Fresh oysters at Get Shucked
  • Sampling honey, honey lollies and honey ice cream at The Honey Pot
  • Delicious chocolates at Bruny Island Chocolate Company
  • Stunning views and beach time at The Neck
  • Fresh cookies from a local bakery

Bruny Island, you stole our hearts, and we’ll definitely be back!

Stepping Back in Time at Port Arthur

Our visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site was like stepping back into another era. Located about 1.5 hours from Hobart, this World Heritage-listed site is one of the most significant and well-preserved convict settlements in Australia, and we spent the whole day exploring it as a family.

After getting our entry tickets at the visitor centre, the first thing we did was hop on the complimentary harbour cruise. The short ferry ride offers a scenic view of the site from the water and passes by the Isle of the Dead and Point Puer – both historically important places. The commentary on board was fascinating and gave us a good overview of the people who lived and died there.

With the map in hand, we followed the suggested walking route around the site, exploring the many different areas. Each stop had a story – from the Penitentiary and the Separate Prison to the Guard Tower and the Commandant’s House. We learned how Port Arthur was designed as a model of reform rather than punishment, and how it aimed to shape convicts into better citizens through discipline, religion, and hard work.

The penitentiary was one of the most impressive buildings – once a flour mill, it was later converted into a prison for hundreds of convicts. Standing in its ruins gave us chills, knowing how much history those walls had seen. The Separate Prison was even more intense – with its silent system of isolation, it showed a whole different approach to discipline. The kids were wide-eyed walking through the small cells and solitary chapel, asking lots of questions.

We also visited the asylum, which helped us understand how mental illness was dealt with in the 1800s, and the hospital, which cared for injured and sick convicts. The kids were both curious and empathetic as they learned how harsh life was back then.

There were peaceful moments too – walking through the Commandant’s Garden and sitting by the water made for nice breaks during the day. But one of the most memorable parts of the day was our final stop at the church ruins. By then, the kids were tired but still asking thoughtful questions. The church, built by convicts, was never consecrated but played an important role in the reform system. Its tall walls and open space were a beautiful yet sobering reminder of the lives that passed through here.

This site is more than just old buildings – it’s a place full of human stories. The kids learned so much, and we were grateful for the hands-on experiences and detailed signage throughout the site. There’s also a café, toilets, shaded areas, and plenty of spots to rest, which made it very family-friendly.

Port Arthur was one of the most meaningful and educational stops on our Tassie trip. It helped us connect with Australia’s past in a way that was engaging, thoughtful, and truly memorable for all of us.

Stunning Day at Mt Wellington – A Must-Do in Tasmania

Our visit to Mt Wellington (kunanyi) in Tasmania was one to remember. We were incredibly lucky to be there on a rare day with no wind and plenty of sunshine, which made the whole experience even more magical. If you’re visiting Hobart, this iconic mountain is an absolute must-do – and trust me, photos don’t do it justice.

Driving up to the summit was an adventure in itself. The road is winding and rocky, with beautiful views around every turn. There are plenty of places to stop along the way if you want to stretch your legs or take some photos. When we reached the top, we were blown away by the panoramic views of Hobart, the River Derwent, and beyond.

We explored the mountain walks around the summit area, taking in the rugged landscape and crisp mountain air. There are clearly marked tracks and plenty of rock formations that the kids enjoyed climbing. It felt like a natural playground with views everywhere you looked.

One of the highlights was stopping by the informational displays – they were excellent and answered so many of the kids’ curious questions about the mountain, the native wildlife, geology, and even the cultural significance of kunanyi to the local Palawa people.

We climbed some of the larger rocks (carefully!) to enjoy a better view of the city below – what a perspective. After that, we made our way to the observation shelter, a beautiful enclosed space with wide glass panels offering uninterrupted views. It’s a great spot to enjoy the scenery even when the weather isn’t ideal, but we were lucky to experience it on a clear day.

The walk to the lookout from the shelter was equally amazing – short, easy, and with breathtaking views all around. The kids loved running along the track and spotting the different layers of the mountain and cityscape.

We wrapped up our visit with smiles all around. It was the kind of outing that left us feeling refreshed and connected to nature. Peaceful, scenic, and fun – Mt Wellington is definitely a top highlight from our Tassie trip.

Hidden Gem in Hobart: The Chowk Nepalese Pub

We accidentally discovered the Chowk while returning from one of our day trips — it was just around the corner from our hotel, so we decided to check it out for dinner. The place was surprisingly big, warm, and welcoming, filled with beautiful Nepalese décor that instantly made us feel at home.

We started with the Paau cocktail, which truly reminded us of flavours from Nepal. It was a perfect blend of tangy, fruity, and spicy — refreshing and so nostalgic!

Then came the food. We ordered the meat platter that featured two pieces of sausages, along with half portions of regular-sized meats such as taas, choila, and chicken wings.

But the highlight for us was definitely the momo platter – juicy, perfectly spiced dumplings served four ways: steamed, fried, chilli, and sandheko. Each bite was absolutely delicious. Even the kids couldn’t get enough!

We’re so glad we found this place — such a lovely dining experience. If you’re in Hobart and craving authentic Nepali food, highly recommend it!

Quick Stop at Mt Nelson – Worth It!

We made a quick stop at Mt Nelson and were pleasantly surprised. The view from the lookout was stunning, with sweeping sights over Hobart and the water. There’s a big old signal station there and a telescope you can use to see far across the landscape. We even spotted heaps of wallabies hopping around – such a bonus! A quiet, peaceful place that’s perfect for a short break on the way.

The area is well maintained with a small café nearby if you’ve got time to stay longer. It’s not as crowded as some other lookouts, which made it feel even more special. Definitely worth the detour if you’re exploring the Hobart area.
