My birthday weekend with Halloween Themed birthday bash

I guess it is correct when they say age is just a number. I am getting older but I don’t feel any different than what I felt 5 years ago. As the birthday passes every year, I have not started to feel older yet.

Any way, 28 October, Saturday was my birthday and I had 3 days of celebration, thanks to my friends and family.

On Friday, we had organized a girls’ night out with a few of my friends. It was so much fun with 11 girls going out for dinner, drinks and dance. As our better half looked after our kids at home, we met up in the city and went to Pancake on the Rocks for dinner.

The dinner went well with lots of fun and laughter. The food was good and the company was the best and it was a great start to the night.

There was one moment when two kids came out from the bathroom with their mum and all the mums in our group were looking at them and thinking about their own kids. I guess we can never stop being a mum in our hearts no matter where we are.

After dinner, we went to Marquee night club for their Zoo night. It was advertised as “Sydney just got wilder… with glamorous dancers, tons of confetti, blasts of CO2, suspended jungle vines and golden animals, Marquee Zoo has arrived. The new face of Friday nights at Marquee, Zoo features pumping party music you can get down and dirty to, coupled with a crazy party atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city.”

We were all excited for the night and were at the venue by 10pm. When we arrived, there were not many people at the club so we started the night with a few shots of tequila.

As the night went on, more people started to arrive and it started to be more fun. Initially, I felt like maybe I was too old to be clubbing but as the night went on and we started dancing, we had so much fun that everything seemed perfect.

The girls even sang “Happy Birthday” for me at midnight which was just sweet.

We danced till 2pm and then decided to go home. We caught Uber home and I was home by 2:40am. I think it has been more than 5 years since I have had this big a night out.

When I was home, I was expecting Chhori and AS to be in bed but to my surprise, AS was still awake and working on the decoration for our party on Saturday night. The feature wall was coming along nicely and I was so impressed. I am sure his engineering skills was put to good use 🙂

I stayed awake for another hour and we went to bed and it was almost 4am.

At 6:30, I could hear Chhori wake up and go to the lounge room. I tried to ignore her for a while and get back to sleep but couldn’t for long so I went out too. She was so excited to see the wall decoration. She said “Happy Birthday Mama.” She has been saying that for a week now every day.

She has been saying to everyone who listens to her, “We are having a Halloween party. I am a witch and mama is a witch and papa is a skeleton.” In a sweet little voice. It was so good to see her so excited.

I let AS sleep for a while and after breakfast, started preparing for the party. It was nice to receive calls, messages and posts from family and friends wishing me on my birthday.

AS woke up and continued with the decoration for a while as I prepared special food like witches fingers and spider eggs. The biggest task was to pull off this special Brain cake.

While looking for Halloween cake ideas, AS came up with this idea for a Brain cake, which took some convincing on his part. I was not too sure at first but I am just glad we did it. We were super excited when the cake came to life at the end. It was hard work on both our sides but it was worth it. I will post a step by step on how we did it on my next post.

Then AS made the drink and by the time everything was ready the guests started to arrive.

We got dressed , Me and Chhori as witches and AS as skeleton.

Our guests were all dressed in different outfit like nuns, pirates, skeletons, devils, vampires and so on and our apartment was looked like one cool place.

Everyone was impressed by the decorations and the cake and everything else so it was really great. I am so glad that all the effort AS made with the decoration was so great that whole night everyone was talking about it.

After the entrée, we had a few games planned for the children and adults and it went well. Everyone enjoyed it and had fun and took heaps of photos.

Then it was dinner time and the special moment where I cut the cake. I was expecting people to gross out over the cake but everyone was excited, especially the kids with the cake.

We had a great party and it was definitely a success looking at everyone’s reaction.

That night when we went to bed, we thought we have to do this all over again the next day. As we had different groups of people, we thought it was a good idea to invite people in different groups which meant on Sunday we started the same routine with all the food.

Decorations were already done and making the cake was easier this time around.

All the guests were dressed up this time as well and we had fun. By the time, the last guest left on Sunday, we were so tired that we went to bed straight away.

Having late night for 3 days in a row was not a great idea but I had an awesome weekend for my birthday. I feel so blessed to have AS in my life who made sure I had a great time and all my friends and family who were there for me.

Take care,

Chhori turns 2: the celebration party

We decided to have a party to celebrate Chhori’s birthday with our friends and family after puja. We started planning when we were here in Sydney with my in laws so we had a venue booked months in advance. I also found photographer via Facebook so they were booked for the day as well.

I am sure anyone who is trying to book an event from overseas goes through lots of frustrations when you can’t find the right vendor to execute your ideas. I had the same problem when we planned our wedding and it was no different this time.

We had no idea what was available in Nepal in terms of decoration so I bought everything I could think of from here and I am so glad I did. Because when we got there, I couldn’t get the things that we wanted.

As the venue and photographer were sorted, the next big thing was cake and decoration. I bought the Dora cake topper from here so we got the baker to do a cake with those. I was pretty happy with the cake.

We also ordered cupcakes which did not turn out as planned. The cupcake was not the pink colour we wanted and it was not decorated as we had explained but I guess we shouldn’t have set our expectation too high since everyone seemed to use their own ideas instead of following ours 😦

The biggest problem we faced was not finding a person to do helium balloons. After searching and talking to so many people, finally when I put out a call for help on Facebook and a friend gave us the number of a guy who did the balloons. We got the number just a day before the party and I was so worried on what to do until then.

The other big problem was our outfit. I had this vision to have me and Chhori wearing similar colour outfit and AS can have tie to coordinate with us. It turned out choosing the outfit was not easy as I planned because there are too many choices. Finally after going to a few boutiques, I settled on golden and fuchsia pink lengha and Chhori was getting fuchsia pink princess style gown.

It took many visits to get the dresses right fitting but the end result was perfect. I loved them.

It was a big job to find fuchsia pink tie in Kathmandu. The shop keepers had millions of other suggestions on the tie if they didn’t have the one I needed. But finally we found a shop that sold one and was super happy with it.

When the day of party arrived I was happy as most of the stuff were sorted. I got my make-up done and got dressed and got Chhori ready. AS was busy getting the decoration finished and picking up the cake.

He has always been so supportive of my ideas and when I plan, he helps me to make my plans come true. I think we complement each other well.

The photographers were already at the venue when we arrived. I was glad to see all the decoration looked as we planned. The hall was looking beautiful with hundreds of white and pink balloons floating around.

We had a few hours left before the guests arrived so we took photos of Chhori, us and with our parents.

Slowly, the venue started to fill with family and friends. I hadn’t met many of them for a while so it was great time for all of us.

After a couple of hours into the party, we cut the cake and then on to the dance floor as usual.

I had been teaching Chhori to dance to the Nepali move song “Sirai ma sirbandi” for the last few month but I didn’t know if she would dance or not. But she made us so proud by dancing to the song with all the right moves and steps. She actually danced twice to the song and we got some amazing photos and video of that. She was looking totally adorable and princessy in her cute outfit.

All our relatives were dancing and enjoying themselves as well. It was a really happy occasion for us to celebrate the birthday of our beautiful daughter with our close family and friends.

By 10 pm the guests had dinner and stared to leave. Chhori was really tired and was fast sleep on the sofa. It was a long day but we were very happy with the end result.

Chhori was spoiled by everyone with gifts, dresses and money. I know Chhori doesn’t understand much yet but we have some great photos and videos that she can go through when she is a bit older.

I will write more about our trip to Nepal in the next post. Till then take care.

Chhori turns 2 – Birthday Puja

One of the main reasons for our visit to Nepal this time was to celebrate Chhori 2nd birthday in Nepal with friends and family.

In Newari culture, for reasons unknown and out of tradition handed down from generation to generation, the first birthday of a child is not celebrated. When a child is born, we have chhaiti, nwaran then pasni. After pasni, the big celebration is second birthday, which is known as Nirbuni.

Time goes by so quickly and our little munchkin turned a BIG 2 on 20 Feb.

As we were in Nepal for the celebration, we followed Newari culture to perform her birthday puja.

In Newari culture, we make Yomari every even birthday 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12. Yomari is a delicacy of the Newars. It consists of an external covering of rice-flour and an inner content of sweet substances such as chaku (Molasses). Click here for the recipe.

We had planned things in advance for this and were happy that things came together as planned on the big day.

On her birthday, in the morning, MIL prepared for birthday puja with sagun (traditional plate typically consisting of a boiled egg, smoked fish, a “bara”, haku chhoila” and “aila” and “dhau”) .

We had other relatives who were invited for the occasion including my parents, uncles and aunts.

The puja started with tika and yomari mala (garland) from my MIL followed by ritual to pour bits of rice, radish, coins, and cucumber in a small container from her head. This is believed to drive any evil spirit.

Then it was followed by Sagun and gifts to her.She was really spoiled with gifts like dresses and jewelleries.

My parents had come with my relatives to celebrate Chhori’s birthday with lots of food which included rotis, fruits, sagun and gifts.

After my MIL my mum and aunt did similar puja. Tika and sagun was followed by gifts to Chhori, me, AS and to my in laws.

Chhori loved the whole process except when the yomari garland was put around her neck as the string annoyed her and she wanted to take it out. She was happy with so many people around us that day for the whole day. We really had a great time with all the relatives.

After all the puja was finished, we had cake smash for her too. What a difference a year can make. When we had done the cake smash on Chhori’s first birthday, she was happy to be messy and smashed the cake well, which gave us some amazing photos but this year she definitely has become a big girl.

At first she just used her finger to taste the cake and then asked for a knife to cut the cake when asked to smash it. Nevertheless we had a great time and she had a lot of fun sharing a piece with everyone.

The day was long but fun and exciting.

We had her birthday party on another day so I will write more about it in my next post.

Till then, take care everyone and happy Monday.

Birth Week :)

Yap, you read it right, instead of just being my birthday on 28th Oct, it turned out to be a birthday week this year :).

I am sure I have mentioned here many times that Nepali people follow different calendars which means we have birthday in different days every year depending on what you are following, the Gregorian calendar, Nepalese Calendar or the tithi (birth chart and position of sun, moon and planets). Normally, I don’t care much as I don’t really know when my Nepali tithi birthday is. My mum normally does some puja in Nepal and that is it.

But as my parents are here, I celebrated my tithi birthday. It was on 21st Oct and my mum did a simple puja for me that day. As it was a weekday we didn’t do much but just tika and sagun to mark the day. It is always special to have your parents around as they make you feel special every day.

birthday-3 birthday-4

Also after the puja, Chhori gave me a flower (thanks to AS) and a big hug and kisses to wish me on my birthday. I put a few of those photos taken during the puja on Facebook which led to many of my friends and family wishing me birthday as well. Thus the birthday week celebration officially started.

During the whole week, I had birthday wishes and Facebook posts which made me feel very special  🙂

On the 27th, my boss bought me flowers and they were lovely.

birthday-19

On 28th, I work up early as normal and waited for Chhori and AS to wake up. As I was checking my phone, I saw a message from AS that he had send me before he went to bed so he was the first one to wish me :).

It said, “Happy Birthday to the one who has always been there for me. Whether rain or shine, I’m so happy and grateful that I can call you mine.”

He definitely made me happy and it was a great start of my special day.

There were a few more messages in my Facebook and inbox as well as sms which were flowing the whole day.

When both my sweethearts were awake, AS got Chhori to give me a card and flowers and gifts.

birthday-8

The flowers were lovely and loved my wallet, sunnies and umbrella. AS has always been so thoughtful and Chhori was too cute hugging and kissing me. I have to admit it was one of the best days I have ever had.

birthday-2

Since Chhori came into our life, our life has changed for the better and I love being a mum to such a cutie pie.

birthday-11

It was the first day of Tihar that day so we did Kag Puja and went out for breakfast. I had egg Florentine and AS had the Big Breakfast. The food was yummy and we were stuffed by the end of it.

birthday-15-tile birthday-16 birthday-18

The plan for the afternoon was lunch and movie as mum was looking after Chhori and we didn’t want to come home late. I think when you have a baby, you change things so you can be with your kids more and I was more than happy to come home early to be with Chhori.

page

First we went to watch a movie. We choose to watch “The Girl on the Train”. I had heard good reviews about it so AS got tickets to it.

The movie was OK. I loved the drama and suspense but at times I found it very slow.

For lunch AS chose a nice Japanese contemporary restaurant called Sorenzo.  When we walked into the restaurant, as it was afternoon, there were not many people. The ambiance of the place was good but the food is what I am still thinking about.

We went there for lunch so we thought we would order a set menu to make it easy as it had a wide range of dishes.

We thought we were getting 5 different dishes and dessert as there was slash in the menu between two items. We thought that we could easily handle much of food as Japanese food is small in portion generally but we realised later that we were getting everything in the set menu.

So we started with our favourite edamame with salt sprinkled on the top. It was warm just like I liked it.

birthday-20

It was followed by fresh pacific oysters. Both AS and I are not a big fan of oysters but we loved them as they were tasty and full of flavour and surprisingly they didn’t have a fishy aftertaste .

birthday-21

Then came Kingfish carpaccio which was amazing and we finish them in a few seconds as it was delicious.

birthday-22

It was followed by the most interesting dish of the day, sashimi platter. But the interesting part of this was the presentation.  The dish came with oozing Nitrogen and a skull making it really interesting. As it was close to Halloween it was a great idea. The platter contained various cuts of Salmon, Kingfish, Tuna and Scallops which were fresh and perfect. We were really impressed at this point and AS was really happy about his pick of restaurants.

birthday-26

Following the sashimi platter, there was a chef’s selection of sushi which was light and perfectly seasoned.

birthday-28

Then came the pan fried scallops with white miso sabayon which was one of the most delicious platters on the menu. The presentation was awesome as well.

birthday-27

Next was tempura platter that included prawns, mushrooms, eggplant and sweet potato. It was fresh and crunchy and very yummy but we couldn’t finish it as we were already so stuffed with the sushi and the sashimi.

birthday-29

The last and main dish was smoked salmon with sweet and spicy miso sauce. The dish was very delicious and flavoursome but we couldn’t finish it as out tummy was screaming to stop as it couldn’t handle the amount of food we were eating 🙂

birthday-25

Finally, it was time for dessert and we both choose ice cream. I had lime sorbet and AS had passionfruit and chilli sorbet. The presentation of the dish was great but unfortunately we couldn’t finish them either.

birthday-23 birthday-24

I think we ate 3 times more than what we normally have for lunch but it was a great experience and loved all the dishes.

birthday-5 birthday-13

After lunch we headed home where our munchkin was eagerly waiting for us. I had invited my brother’s family for dinner that night.

birthday-6

So in the evening when everyone was at my place, we had a cake for my birthday which was an amazing rainbow colourful cake.

birthday birthday-14

The cream was delicious and I loved it so, so much. And thus 28th Oct concluded :).

birthday-10

The next day a friend of my visited and brought a nice dress for my birthday and the following day, some of our friends invited us over for dinner and I got a nice hand bag for a birthday gift.

I am so happy that there are so many people in my life who have made my birthday into a birth-week with their love, blessing and wishes.

Take care everyone,

Happy 1st birthday Chhori!!!

If you have been reading my blog, you know that my parents have returned back to Sydney after 6 months in Nepal and I just stared work again (after a yearlong maternity leave) but the biggest news is that my munchkin, my heart, my life, is growing up so fast that she is turning ONE today.

chhori (3)

This post is dedicated to the very special person in my life, my beautiful daughter.

chhori (4)

It feels like it was just a few months ago that I announced here that I was pregnant. Then she came into our world making our life so colourful and lively.

The first time I saw her, I learned what unconditional love meant. I had never seen anyone or anything more beautiful. Since her arrival, she has brought so much happiness into our life that I will would never have it any other way.

Each day has been better than the day before and I know that the future will be even better.

chhori (1)

Her first touch, her first word, her first smile, her first crawl, her first laugh, and her first step, everything is so special.

Her laugh has become our new favourite sound in life.

When she calls me “Mama”, I am the happiest person in this world.

chhori (5)

“Happy 1st birthday to the child who stole our heart. You are the best gift that we have ever received and thank you for giving us a thousand reasons to smile every day.

Your birth brought happiness and joys. It reminds us of how lucky we are to have a cutie like you in our family. You are the most amazing little thing we have ever seen. Our little angel, may your special day and every day hence bring you as much happiness as you are bringing to all of us. (And please stop growing up so fast. :))

A year older, a lot wiser :)

On 28 October, I celebrated my birthday. A year seemed to just fly away so fast. It feels like it was just a few months ago that I celebrated my last birthday. It is always nice to look back on old birthday celebration posts in my blog. If you haven’t read them before here are some of the ways I celebrated my birthday in the past, 2011 ,2012, 2013 and 2014. Anyway it was my first birthday as a mum and it was just fantastic.

AS took a day off from work to spend the whole day with me so it was a lazy morning for us. We woke up late and went for a brunch to a really nice café with a cool decor and a good menu.

birthday (8)

AS ordered his big breakfast and I ordered Egg Benedict. I have to say the food was yummy and the coffee was good too.

birthday (2) birthday (6)
I was already full from the breakfast when AS surprised with a cake. It was a red half dome orange and chocolate cake. I was happy that AS even put a birthday message on the plate. I was one happy birthday girl for sure :).

birthday (5)

The best birthday gift I got that morning was from Chhori who slept through the whole brunch and some more to give me some time to spend with AS.

birthday (1)

In the evening, we were invited to my brother’s place for dinner.

birthday (7)

I got a surprise celebration there with a yummy birthday cake with my brother’s family and cousins too.

birthday (4)

Today, few of my friends came over with gifts and sweets to celebrate my birthday. It is really naice to be surrounded by such caring people.

I am just happy to be another year older with my love (AS) and my life (Chhori) by my side.

birthday (3)

I am sure I am a lot wiser too as I have become a mum this year which has taught me lots of new things in life.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Halloween.

birthday (9)

Take care everyone till the next post.
