Hidden Gem in Hobart: The Chowk Nepalese Pub

We accidentally discovered the Chowk while returning from one of our day trips — it was just around the corner from our hotel, so we decided to check it out for dinner. The place was surprisingly big, warm, and welcoming, filled with beautiful Nepalese décor that instantly made us feel at home.

We started with the Paau cocktail, which truly reminded us of flavours from Nepal. It was a perfect blend of tangy, fruity, and spicy — refreshing and so nostalgic!

Then came the food. We ordered the meat platter that featured two pieces of sausages, along with half portions of regular-sized meats such as taas, choila, and chicken wings.

But the highlight for us was definitely the momo platter – juicy, perfectly spiced dumplings served four ways: steamed, fried, chilli, and sandheko. Each bite was absolutely delicious. Even the kids couldn’t get enough!

We’re so glad we found this place — such a lovely dining experience. If you’re in Hobart and craving authentic Nepali food, highly recommend it!

Quick Stop at Mt Nelson – Worth It!

We made a quick stop at Mt Nelson and were pleasantly surprised. The view from the lookout was stunning, with sweeping sights over Hobart and the water. There’s a big old signal station there and a telescope you can use to see far across the landscape. We even spotted heaps of wallabies hopping around – such a bonus! A quiet, peaceful place that’s perfect for a short break on the way.

The area is well maintained with a small café nearby if you’ve got time to stay longer. It’s not as crowded as some other lookouts, which made it feel even more special. Definitely worth the detour if you’re exploring the Hobart area.

A Wild Day Out at Zoodoo Zoo

We recently visited Zoodoo Zoo in Richmond, Tasmania – and what a fun day it was for the whole family, especially the kids! It’s a perfect mix of hands-on animal encounters, educational displays, and plenty of space to run around and explore.

🎟️ Tickets were very reasonably priced – around $37.50 per adult and $19.95 for children (under 2s go free), with family passes available too. You can buy your tickets online or at the gate.

📍 Located just a short drive from Hobart, Zoodoo is easy to get to and has free parking on site.

Our adventure began with the primates – we saw monkeys, lemurs, and colourful birds, which were a hit with the kids. After that, we made our way to the reptile area, which had a large collection of snakes. The walls were filled with informative displays that made it a great learning experience.

Next stop: the big cats! We saw the lions and the tiger – though they were having a little nap when we arrived. Still amazing to see them up close.

Then came one of the most exciting parts – feeding the ostrich! We bought a bag of animal food from the shop and were allowed to feed the ostrich and even some zebras, which the kids absolutely loved.

From there, we wandered over to the barnyard where we could feed and pat rabbits, a cow, and a sweet little pony. There was also a fun playground nearby where the kids had a quick run around before heading to the kangaroo area. This was easily one of the highlights – there were so many kangaroos and they weren’t shy at all. The kids had the best time feeding them and spending time up close with these gentle animals.

After that, we visited the sheep and then made our way to the aviary and Tasmanian devil enclosure. The Tasmanian devils were surprisingly cute, and we were lucky enough to catch one of the zookeeper talks – very informative and engaging!

We ended our visit at the maze – it’s a small one, but the kids had heaps of fun getting “lost” and running around.

Overall, Zoodoo Zoo was such a memorable experience – hands-on, well spaced out, and very kid-friendly. Highly recommend for a family day out if you’re in Tasmania.

Stop at the Bread Fridge – Bruny Island

While exploring Bruny Island, we stopped by the famous Bread Fridge – a quirky, self-serve roadside stall. It was stocked with freshly baked bread and homemade cookies. No shopkeeper, just an honesty box and the smell of fresh bakes!

We picked up a pack of ANZAC biscuits, and they were seriously delicious – golden, buttery, and full of flavour. It was quite busy when we arrived, but still such a wholesome and memorable stop on our trip.

What made it special was the simplicity and trust behind it – a true taste of small-town charm. Places like these make you slow down, appreciate the little things, and enjoy travel beyond the usual sights.

A Fun-Filled Family Day at Salamanca Market, Hobart

If you’re visiting Hobart, Salamanca Market is one experience you simply can’t miss. Held every Saturday from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM at Salamanca Place, this lively open-air market is a true celebration of local Tasmanian culture, creativity, and community.

With over 300 unique stalls, the market offers everything from handmade crafts, artisan jewellery, homewares, and clothing to farm-fresh produce, gourmet foods, and local delicacies. The energy is fantastic, filled with music, colour, and the smell of delicious food wafting through the air.

We visited the market with the family and had such a lovely time. There were rows of vibrant stalls, and the kids loved weaving through them, choosing their own snacks, and picking out souvenirs to take home. We bought some beautiful souvenirs, ate fresh fruits, tried a few different street foods, and even treated ourselves to locally made sweets and baked goods.

It’s a great spot for families because there’s something for everyone—treats for the kids, handcrafted gifts, and fresh ingredients to take back home. Plus, the friendly stallholders made the experience even better by sharing stories behind their products.

The market is set against the beautiful backdrop of historic sandstone buildings and is just a short walk from the waterfront, making it perfect for a relaxed Saturday morning stroll.

We all left with happy hearts, full bellies, and bags of goodies. Salamanca Market truly captures the charm of Hobart—warm, welcoming, and full of character.

Highly recommend adding it to your itinerary if you’re ever in Tasmania!
