I wish I had my own sister too!!!

The title says it all. I have a brother but I always wanted a sister as well.  I wish I had one even more for the last few years.

As I grew older, I always loved my brother and never thought not having a sister as any disadvantage at all. But for the last few years, I realised that a sister can be your best friend that you can have no matter what happens in life.

Most of the times friends come and go but if I had a sister I would have had her for my life time.

One of the reasons that triggered this thought was because everyone around me had a sister. All my cousins have their own sister and I can see that they are closer now than when they were kids. They share their happiness and sorrow and they know they have this one person in life they can rely on no matter what. I wish I had the same as well.

I felt the pain even more when I went to Nepal to get married. One of my cousins got married before me. She had her sister’s help in every step of her plan till the day she got married. She was her shopping partner and planning partner. They went everywhere together and were always there when she needed a hand. It was so great to see that she was never too stressed as she knew that there was someone she could count on.

After four months of her wedding I went to Nepal to get married. Unfortunately for me as I have no sister, I ended up doing everything for the wedding on my own. And you know from my posts that Nepalese wedding is not a small affair. I didn’t want to bother my parents so I used to be out of the house everyday doing one thing or another. It is not easy in Nepal like it is here. You can’t do things online or over the phone so you have to meet people for every little thing. That time I so wished I had a sister so I would have gotten some help.

I had a few friends who helped me but I couldn’t expect them to take time off from their work to be with me. If I’d had a sister I am sure she would have done that. Thank god everything went as planned and I am really happy that my parents are so happy with me as well.

After a year of my wedding another of my cousins got married. She lives in US but got married in Nepal. Lucky for her, she has a sister as well so everything was perfectly done when she came to Nepal for wedding. She just came a day before the first day of her wedding and everything was all set.

I guess some people are just plain lucky that they get everything in their life so easily while others have to work hard to get anything in life.

I am not even sure what I want to convey with this post but sometimes when I am alone and have a moment for myself, I wonder and think if I had my own sisters like others do, would my life have been better in some aspect.

I have to be thankful that my life is perfectly fine. I am healthy with loving parents and husband. My work is going fine and I am achieving lot of my dreams. But then there are some areas of life that I feel lack something. I feel like I just want to rant sometimes and today it ended up as a blog.

Prague: Czech Republic

Czech Republic was one of the countries that I was very excited to visit. I have seen so many photos and travel show on Prague that I knew it is going to be a beautiful experience.

prague

Prague didn’t disappoint me at all. What I saw of it was gorgeous, beautiful coloured buildings, a stone bridge, and hilly vistas. Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava River. It is one of the historical places we visited and I really loved it.

prague

We had a local guide for the city tour and it was one of the most amazing and oldest cities with lots of history. I forgot the name of the guide but he was funny and he used to repeat everything twice. At first it was very awkward but then we got used to it.

New town

prague

We were dropped off near a bridge in Prague from where we could see the Grand Prague castle. We took a few photos there and then the guide took us to the new town area of Prague. We passed through by beautiful houses and churches which made the town look really amazing. We went through Welceslas Square which was originally a horse market and Charles Square which was originally a cattle market.

Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge

It is Prague’s most lively and photogenic bridge over the Vltava.  It is the stone bridge which is really old. On our right, we could see the famous Malá Strana. When we walked past the gate there is the bridge between Prague Castle and the city’s Old Town and adjacent areas. I have seen so many photos of this bridge that I didn’t feel that I was there for the first time. We walked around, took photos with the statues on the bridge.

Charles Bridge

There is a tower standing on each end of the bridge. Both towers can be climbed for a view of Prague and the bridge from above. The place seems to be also popular with Czech artists, musicians and souvenir vendors whose stands line both sides of the bridge .

St. Vitus Cathedral

St. Vitus Cathedral

Our next stop was this phenomenal Gothic cathedral, called St Vitus Cathedral. It contains the tombs of many Bohemian kings and Holy Roman Emperors; this cathedral is an excellent example of Gothic architecture and is the biggest and most important church in the country.

Old Town Square

Old Town Square

The Old Town Square is the oldest and most important square of the historical Prague. It is surrounded with historical buildings such as the Old Town City Hall with the famous Astronomical Clock, the imposing St. Nicholas Church and Church of Our Lady before Tyn, and many houses and palaces of various architectural styles and colourful history.

Old Town Square

When I stood in the middle of the square, I could truly see why people love it there so much. Full of history and architecture, it was pleasant and beautiful place to spend hours admiring the beauty and history.

Old Town Square

If you know the history of Czech Republic, this is the square where there was an execution of 27 leadersof the rebellion against Emperor Matthias in 1621. These days the square ground is full of restaurants with outdoor eating area and musicians playing traditional music.

Astronomical Clock

The astronomical clock in the Prague square is the third-oldest astronomical clock in the world and the oldest one still working. It is really beautiful and looks so antique. It has three main components: the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky and displaying various astronomical details; “The Walk of the Apostles”, a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures—notably a figure of Death (represented by a skeleton) striking the time; and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months. I must admit that people were so intelligent in those times that they have this complex clock built which works even till today.

The real author of the clock was discovered in 1961 in an old document, which describes the astronomical dial and says it was made by Mikulas of Kadan in 1410.

The Jan Hus Memorial

The monument of the Protestant reformer Jan Hus, burnt as a heretic in 1415, is situated in the middle of the Old Town Square since 1915. It is one of the most important personalities in Czech history.

The Jan Hus Memorial

Master Jan Hus, the dean of the Charles University in Prague, criticized church practices such as selling indulgence. The monument consists of Jan Hus statue and statues of Czech people around him. Jan Hus statue is looking at the Church of Our Lady Before Tyn, which was the main church of the Hussites. The people around him are the Hussite warriors on one side and on the other side there are prostrated people, forced to leave the country in 1620s, after the rebellion of Czech estates was defeated.

Church of Our Lady before Týn

In the old square, there is a cathedral which is called Church of Our Lady before Týn. The Týn church has always played a major role in the history of the reformation in Bohemia and it was the most important church of the Hussites in the 16th century. Inside, there are many fine sculptures from the pre-Hussite period.

Church of Our Lady before Týn

Church of Our Lady before Týn

The towers of the Church of Our Lady before Tyn are 80 metres high. The church is 52 metres long and 28 metres wide and there are many Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque works of art inside. There is a Gothic tinny font from 1414, the oldest one in Prague. You can see a Gothic baldachin by Matthias Rejsek from 1493 on the pillars there.

The main altar is decorated with paintings by Karel Skreta. There are 19 altars in the church altogether. The church organ, made by Hans Heinrich Mundt in 1673, is the oldest one in Prague.

Prague meridian

Prague meridian

You can still see the Prague meridian in the paving of the square. It indicates the place, where the former Marian column used to cast its shadow at noon. There is an inscription in Czech and Latin languages, saying that time used to be measured according to the meridian.

Medieval houses at the square

Medieval houses at the square

The first houses were built around the Old Town Square in the 12th and 13th centuries. Some of the present houses still have their Romanesque or Gothic foundations, basements or ground floors. The Old Town City Hall was built in the 14th century and the Church of Our Lady before Tyn a little later. The Old Town Square became the economic and political center of Prague Old Town.

The Municipal House

The Municipal House, a national cultural landmark, is among the most significant Art Nouveau buildings in Prague. It is located in the very centre of Prague, directly neighbouring the Powder Gate. The most significant Czech painters and sculptors of the time participated in the decoration of the Municipal House. That list included: Jan Preisler, Mikoláš Aleš, Max Švabinský, František Ženíšek, Ladislav Šaloun, Josef Mařatka, Josef Václav Myslbek, Alfons Mucha.

Dinner in Prague

I have to say, the dinner we went to in Prague was the best one on the whole tour. They knew how to entertain the guest and get them involved the whole evening. The evening started with  traditional music and folk songs followed by dances.

dinner in Prague

They served us a typical Czech meal including unlimited drinks with wine served from special glass pipes.

dinner in Prague

Once the dinner was done they invited us to dance and taught us how to do the traditional steps. Overall a very happy experience.

Charles Bridge

Prague was really a great place to enjoy traditional European hospitality and it was the cheapest place in Europe to do some shopping. AS bought a pair of shoes and I bought 3 while we were there. I definitely need to come and see more of Czech Republic in future.

From Prague we went thru Bohemia and Moravia before crossing into Austria.

Kushe Aushi (Father’s Day)

Today is Kushe Aushi in Nepal which is Nepali Father’s day.  Kush is a type of holy grass. There is a tradition to bring Kush home on this day of Aunshi (no moon day). Hence, this day is called Kushe Aushi.

As I have mentioned in many of my posts before, Nepal has a different calendar than the Gregorian calendar. So in Nepal people also celebrate Father’s day on a different day than the western calendar. In Australia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the first Sunday of September every year but in Nepali calendar, it changes every year according to the positions of sun, moon and the planets. It falls on the last day of the dark fortnight of August or early September. This year, it happens to be today, 17 August 2012. It is commonly known as Buwa ko Mukh Herne in Nepal which translates into looking at father’s face.

As I mentioned in my previous post regarding Mother’s day, this day is very similar to Mother’s day and we cook yummy food for dad. Mostly mum will be do the cooking in reality but we give that to dad  :). Like Mother’s day Mum makes Sagun and we give that to dad.

Both my parents don’t have their dad anymore so every father’s day they prepare sida daan for a priest. Sida is a holy mixture of rice grains and other pure food materials and a collection of clothes.. They have a shower first thing in the morning and go to the priest’s house to give sida to the priest. During Kuse Aunse Hindus from all over Nepal, whose fathers have passed away descend on Gokarneswar Madadev Temple to worship and take holy dips, and present offerings. They also do Sraddha or pinda daan to their deceased father and some do Shradha at home or at the near river or at any holy place nearby.

Kuse Aunse , Father's Day

Mythology has placed the Gokarna shrine from prehistoric times when Lord Shiva hid himself in the Pashupatinath forest, disguised as a one-horned golden deer, from the gods and mankind. While he spent his days frolicking, the world suffered so Lord Vishnu, the preserver, Lord Brahma, the creator and Lord Indra, the king of Gods, took matters into their hands and searched for him. Finally a goddess revealed Shiva’s disguise. So when they finally caught the deer by the horn , it burst into fragments and Shiva revealed himself. He asked the other three gods to establish his horn in their three worlds. So, Vishnu installed his section in his abode in Vaikuntha, Indra in his realm in heaven and Brahma enshrined it at the sacred site of Gokarneshwor. The following day the gods and goddesses descended and bathed in Bagmati river, paid homage to Shiva and established the present day tradition of ancestor worship at Gokarna.

As I have describe in my previous post, in Nepal the first year of marriage is considered to be very important. So during every festival, there are things you are meant to do. This affects how you celebrate Dashain, Tihar, Father’s Day, Mother’s day and more. Last year, I had my first Father’s day after my wedding and my MIL made sure it was a special one for my dad. Here are some photos from the day.

So if you haven’t called you dad to wish him, do give him a call and make him smile. And to all the proud dads out there, Happy Father’s Day.

Here is one of the Father-daughter song form Nepali movie. Hope you will like it.

City2Surf 2012

I want to think of myself as being health conscious but I have to admit that I have never reached the point where I was completely satisfied with my body. I always have something to complain about. Anyway since I got married, AS has been a great support and workout partner. He has so much knowledge in health and fitness and always keeps suggesting to me to do various exercises to improve my fitness. Since last year to motivate ourselves we decided to run the 14km City2surf.

city2surf 2012

City2Surf is the largest timed running race in the world and it has been held as an annual event since the first run on 5 September 1971. It is a charity run and this year they raised 3.9 million dollars. The best thing about this run is that anyone can participate. You just need to pay the entry fee and off you go. There are singles, couples, seniors, kids, mothers/fathers with prams and family coming together to run and have some fun along with the exercise.

city2surf 2012

The run starts from city centre and passes through the suburbs of East Sydney, Kings Cross, Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, Dover Heights and ends at Bondi Beach. The most difficult part of the course is “Heartbreak Hill” at the halfway mark, a 2 km long steep ascent from Rose Bay to Vaucluse along New South Head Road.

city2surf 2012

I was a bit scared this year because since the birth of my nephew a month ago, our exercise routine has gone out of the window. The weather prediction for the day was also mostly rainy and windy. So it didn’t look like it was going to be a fun run this time.

city2surf 2012

But we still managed to be in the city by 9am for our run to start along with 85,000 other runners. Just before the run started, most people were throwing their jumpers and hoodies to the side of the street for charities.

city2surf 2012

As we run it gets so hot so it was normal for people to throw away the old jumpers that they come with. We did that last year but we became wiser this year and decided to tie them around our hips to use after the race. Last year after the race we were chilled to the bones and we had to go to the mall to buy a new jumper.

In the crowd there were so many people with masks like gorillas, Batman, Super girl, the Smurfs, and a man in a sumo suit. I think one of the highlights must me the group of guys dressed as Usman Bolt, the history making Olympic athletic from Jamica.

When the gun when off to start me and AS along with everyone else took our pace. I think the first 5 km was ok as it was just the start. We ran and walked alternately.

There were lots of people cheering along the way as well as many water and Gatorade station. There were lots of live bands and mascots as well. I did manage to take some photos. I knew that the clock was ticking but it was fun to stop for a few second for photos.

city2surf 2012

When we reached 7km, I couldn’t believe that we were only half way through. I was really tired and I was asking AS to slow down. By then we were also climbing uphill which didn’t help at all. I have to thank AS who kept me going even though my toes were hurting really bad in my left foot.

city2surf 2012

We did this last year also but I didn’t remember it being too so hard so I kept pushing myself to the end. When we were on the last 4 km I was really happy and on the last 2km, I was glad it was going to be over soon. When we crossed the finish line we knew that we did good as we finished in under 2 hour (1 hour, 50 minutes). We did about the same last year as well so both of us were very happy. We got the medal for finishing it.  🙂

city2surf 2012

We caught up with a friend of ours who ran as well and were just happy to catch a bus to go have something to eat. It was 12.30 by then and both of us hadn’t eaten anything.

city2surf 2012

city2surf 2012While practising for the run, I tried to research on how to make a quick recover after the run and I found the following in the website.

1. Within 5 minutes of finishing, drink some water or a natural electrolyte drink like coconut water.

2. Within 15-20 minutes of finishing, consume a recovery drink that contains high quality protein and carbohydrates – stash some protein powder (organic/vegan brown rice protein, or a good quality whey protein is best in our books but use whatever works for you) in your run pouch and mix it with cold water at the end of your race and you’re good to go!

3. Within 60-90 minutes of finishing, consume some whole grains with fish (your best option!), lean meat, egg, nuts, or another good quality solid protein source and plenty of salad or green veggies.

4. Antioxidant rich foods are your friend, so anything green or red in colour, or even a good old-fashioned apple, is on the menu!

5. Avoid anything inflammatory post-race, like processed carbs, sugar and caffeine. Alcohol is definitely in this family too but we know avoiding a beer after the race might be a little too much of a big ask, so if a few bevvies are on the menu, make sure you do a few things to counteract the effect, like these…

6. Before you start swigging from your beer mug, swallow a little milk thistle, drink some beetroot juice, or gulp down some fish oil supplements. Snack on anti-inflammatory foods like cherries, berries, walnuts, flaxseeds and kale… make ‘em into a juice if you need to and then, if you still feel like it that beer is all yours! Just remember to drink plenty of water alongside it!

7. Oh… and remember to STRETCH after your race.

Note to self for next year

Don’t wait until less than weeks to go till the City to Surf before bothering to look at the recommended training program.

Incident, not ACCIDENT, Thank God!

You know how I was telling about me being accident prone in my last post and worried that things might get worse. So, I was extra careful all these days taking advice from all of you (Thanks everyone BTW). But then I can’t help it when someone else makes a mistake.

Yesterday, I was booked to get a massage at 6.00pm. So I left home at 4.30pm as I had to go through peak hour traffic. The time to travel to this place is normally 40 to 45 minutes from home but I thought I better leave early just in case.  And unfortunately, the traffic was so bad that it was 5.25pm and I was still on the highway. I was going so slow like 10km/hr that my GPS asked me twice if I want to switched to pedestrian mode. I was just hoping that I would be able to make it on time. I was looking at so many cars in front of me and hundreds behind me as well. There was no escape. As I was scanning the road and crawling through the traffic I looked at my rear view mirror. I saw the driver behind me and he was talking to someone in another car on the next lane while his car was still rolling. I knew even before he hit me that he was going to hit me but I couldn’t do anything. There was hardly any room in front of me to move. I felt so helpless. Then I just heard a BANG.

For a few second I was just shocked and I couldn’t do anything. My hands were shaking. I haven’t had an accident for a long time (touch wood). The only one I was in was a while back and I had to write off my car then.

For a while I was in a confused state but then I gained my composure, took my mobile and went out to see the damage. It was a bit dark already and the other driver was still in his car. I am not too sure what he was expecting or maybe he was in shock as well.

I was so proud of myself when I realised that I needed to take the photo of the other car and its rego if he decided to do a runner (the traffic was so bad even he wanted to, he couldn’t but I have heard about it so many times that I need to be smart). So I took the photo of the registration of the car first (thanks to smart phones these days). Also on the back of my mind I knew I was running late for my appointment for the massage which I might I have to cancel. Anyway I started assessing the damage on my car and to my surprise I couldn’t see even a scratch. It was a bit dark so I was not sure what to do and we were on the middle lane in the highway. We were holding up the already crawling traffic.

Finally the other driver came out of his car. He checked what had happened and apologised blaming the other driver who was distracting him for the accident. He was relieved that there was no damage.

Just to be safe in case I wasn’t seeing anything due to darkness, I asked if I can have his licence number or phone number. He was a bit hesitant. I told him I would not call him if things are ok but I just wanted to be sure nothing falls off while I drive home.  He said, “You can see nothing has happened” and tried not to provide his details. I told him I won’t contact him if there was no problems. I am sure he thought I was such a pain in the a** for asking his details when clearly he could see that no damage was done. I just wanted to be safe than sorry later so didn’t really care that he was annoyed. Anyway I pushed him harder and said I can wait for the cops to come or he can give me his details and we can go our own ways. So finally he gave me his mobile number.

While I was typing his number on my phone I decided to call the number right then to make sure he had given me the right number. I was glad when his phone started ringing. Finally we both got back to our car and were on our way. I am so glad there was so much traffic that we were literally crawling on the highway that even though the car hit mine, I was fine and so was my car.

I checked my car again in day light today and nothing was damaged . I am so glad that I don’t have to chase anyone up to fix my car. Also I made the appointment for my massage. I was in front of the shop by 6.05pm where my hubby was waiting for me. It was so great to get the massage after the whole ordeal and my 14km run on Sunday.  I am just happy that it turned out to be an incident only, not an ACCIDENT. I thank God for looking after me.
