Hello from Tasmania: Our Summer Holiday Adventure

Our summer holiday this year took us to the charming city of Hobart, Tasmania, and we couldn’t have had a better time! From the moment we boarded our flight, we were filled with excitement, and by the time we landed, Hobart had already started to win us over.

Hobart is such a unique place—nestled between the mountains and the sea, it’s a city that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. It’s smaller and quieter than some of the major Australian cities, but that’s part of its charm. For our family, it was the perfect spot to unwind and explore together.

We stayed in a lovely Doubletree by Hilton in the city, which gave us easy access to everything Hobart had to offer. The kids absolutely loved it—they could run around freely, and it felt safe and peaceful. The peaceful surroundings gave us the space we needed to recharge, yet we were still close enough to all the action.

As for the food, we were in heaven! Hobart has so many incredible options—whether we were grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a leisurely meal. We enjoyed everything from fresh seafood a to delicious local treats.

On one of our days, we ventured out to the Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum—a fascinating experience for the whole family. The kids were fascinated by the life-sized husky statues and learning about the Antarctic explorers. We also took a stroll through the beautiful Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, where the kids had a blast running around and exploring the stunning plant displays.

We also visited Bruny Island, a short ferry ride from Hobart, where we enjoyed the incredible views, wildlife, and delicious local cheeses. Another memorable stop was Port Arthur, a historic site with such a powerful story. Walking around the grounds and learning about its history was both educational and thought-provoking for the whole family.

One of the most exciting moments was when we watched the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Hobart. The kids were mesmerised by the dazzling display over the harbour, and it was such a special way to ring in the new year together.

We couldn’t leave Tasmania without exploring Salamanca Market—the vibrant stalls filled with local produce, crafts, and handmade treasures were fantastic. The kids loved browsing through the goodies and picking out a few souvenirs.

Another unforgettable adventure was our visit to the Tall Trees Walk and Russell Cascade waterfall. The towering trees made us feel so small in the best possible way, and the kids had a blast hiking through the forest. The Russell Cascade Waterfall walk, with its lush greenery and stunning views, was a perfect way to connect with nature and unwind.

Another highlight was the breathtaking Mount Wellington. We drove to the summit, and the views were nothing short of spectacular. The kids had fun hiking around, and we enjoyed the panoramic vistas of Hobart, the Derwent River, and the surrounding wilderness.

Throughout our trip, it was the little moments that made it special: watching the kids discover new things, sharing meals at cozy cafés, and taking in the scenery. Hobart may be a small city, but it’s full of charm and adventure, and it’s a place we can’t wait to return to.

Hobart, Tasmania—thank you for the memories! It was the perfect place for our summer holiday, and we can’t wait to see where our next adventure will take us.

A Rainy Adventure at the Marine Discovery Centre, Central Coast

One rainy day during our Central Coast getaway, we decided to escape the weather and visit the Marine Discovery Centre. At $12 per person, the entry fee was fair for the kids, though as adults, it felt a little pricey since we spent most of our time supervising.

The Marine Discovery Centre is part of a Senior Technical College and serves as a working marine research facility, which gave the place a unique vibe. It’s not just a tourist attraction—it’s a centre of marine education and conservation. The staff there were fantastic, engaging with the kids and really taking the time to explain the marine exhibits in ways that sparked their curiosity.

A big hit for the kids was the discovery room. It was filled with all kinds of hands-on activities, from displays of seashells and shark jaws to a microscope with marine samples they could examine. The tactile experience of exploring the exhibits kept them entertained for ages, and they loved learning through play.

There were also several large aquariums showcasing an array of fascinating fish, as well as smaller tanks that highlighted the different breeding stages of marine life and coral growth. It was incredible to see these close-up displays of ocean ecosystems, which made the educational side of the visit feel fun and engaging.

To top it off, since it was school holidays, they had a dedicated craft area where kids could sit down, colour, and do arts and crafts. My little ones were thrilled—they spent time drawing marine creatures and making ocean-themed crafts, which added a creative and relaxing break in between exploring the exhibits.

Although the centre itself wasn’t huge, the interactive elements, school holiday activities, and the dedication of the staff made it a great rainy-day adventure for the kids. For us adults, it was a thoughtful reminder of how important marine conservation is, and how hands-on learning can leave a lasting impression on young minds.

A Beautiful Day in Byron Bay

Byron Bay – a place that effortlessly captures your heart with its beauty and charm. Our recent trip to this coastal paradise was nothing short of magical.

From the moment we arrived, we were swept away by the laid-back vibe of the town. The streets buzzed with happy faces, local shops, and cafes filled with the aroma of fresh coffee. It felt like everyone here knew how to pause and embrace the beauty of the moment.

Our main destination was the famous Byron Bay Lighthouse, a landmark that has graced countless postcards. Perched on the easternmost point of mainland Australia, the lighthouse offers panoramic views of the ocean that are nothing short of breathtaking. As we made our way up, we were lucky enough to spot pods of whales swimming gracefully in the deep blue sea. Watching these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was a moment of pure awe and wonder.

The day couldn’t have been more perfect – sunny skies, a gentle ocean breeze, and a sense of serenity that seemed to envelop the whole place. We spent time soaking in the views, capturing memories with our cameras, and simply appreciating the natural beauty around us.

One of the best things about Byron Bay is how effortlessly it combines nature with a vibrant community vibe. After the lighthouse visit, we strolled through the town, enjoying everything from street performers to delicious food. There’s something special about this place – a harmony that makes you want to stay forever.

Byron Bay is more than just a destination; it’s an experience. It’s a reminder to slow down, breathe deeply, and embrace the beauty of life. We left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already planning our next trip back.

Jacaranda blossoms

Spring in Sydney is a magical time of the year, and I absolutely love it. The warmer temperatures invite us to enjoy the beaches, spend time outdoors, and soak up the sunshine. But what truly makes spring special in Sydney is the breathtaking sight of jacaranda trees in full bloom.

These iconic purple blossoms transform the city into a picture-perfect wonderland. Streets, parks, and neighbourhoods are draped in a canopy of vibrant violet flowers, creating a dreamy, almost surreal atmosphere. It’s no wonder jacaranda season is such a beloved time for locals and visitors alike.

This weekend, we decided to embrace the season and visit one of the parks known for its stunning jacaranda trees. The view was simply mesmerising. We spent hours strolling through the park, capturing beautiful photos, and taking in the tranquil surroundings. The kids loved running under the jacaranda trees, their laughter blending with the peaceful rustling of the leaves.

For me, jacaranda season feels like a celebration of nature’s beauty and a reminder to pause and appreciate the small joys in life. These purple blossoms have a way of uplifting my spirits and making even the simplest day feel special. Whether it’s enjoying a morning coffee under a jacaranda tree or taking a leisurely walk along a jacaranda-lined street, it’s impossible not to smile when surrounded by their vibrant hues.

Jacarandas bloom for only a few weeks, typically peaking in late October to early November, making their beauty fleeting but all the more precious. It’s a season that brings people together—whether it’s photographers capturing the perfect shot, families enjoying picnics, or friends gathering under the blossoms for a catch-up.

If you’re in Sydney during spring, make sure to take a moment to experience the magic of jacaranda season. Trust me, these trees have a charm that’s hard to resist and can brighten anyone’s day.

What’s your favourite part of spring? Do you love jacarandas as much as I do? Let me know! 🌸💜
