Piro Jeera Aloo (Hot cumin potatoes)

Hello everyone! Today, I’m excited to share with you a super simple and delicious recipe using just potatoes and some spices. It’s perfect for those days when your pantry is running low. Let’s get started! 

Ingredients:

• Potatoes : 1/2 kg
• Turmeric powder : 1/2 teaspoon
• Chili powder : 1 teaspoon
• Cumin seeds : 1/2 teaspoon
• Chili flakes : 1 teaspoon
• Oil : 2 teaspoons
• Water : as required


First, we’ll start by boiling the potatoes. I like to use a pressure cooker for this, but you can use any method you prefer. Make sure the potatoes are not overcooked.

Once the potatoes are boiled, peel and cut them into bite-sized pieces. Now, let’s make a spice paste. In a bowl, add some turmeric powder and chili powder. Add a little water and mix well to form a paste. Set this aside.

Next, take a pan and heat some oil. When the oil is hot, add some cumin seeds and chili flakes. Wait until they turn brown.

Now, add the spice paste we made earlier and fry for a few minutes.

Add the boiled potatoes and mix everything well. Cover the pan and let it cook for a few minutes so all the spices blend perfectly.

And there you have it! Our delicious Piro Jeera Aloo is ready. Enjoy it with rice, Chiura (beaten rice), or roti.

Simple chicken curry

It has been a few days that my hubby wanted to eat typical daal bhaat, aachar and masu. Normally we don’t eat rice at home so yesterday I decided to make him the Nepali meal. So I cooked this simple chicken recipe.

Ingredients

  • Chicken, about 1.5 kg, cut into medium sized pieces
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes diced
  • 2 fresh green chilies
  • 2 teaspoon ginger garlic paste
  • 8 teaspoon olive oil
  • 3  teaspoon cumin powder
  • 2  teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric power
  • A few curry leaves
  • Salt as per taste

Steps

  • Remove the skin from the chicken.(optional)
  • Season the pieces with 3 tablespoons of oil, salt, chilli, turmeric, coriander and cumin powder.

  • Set aside for at least an half hour.
  • Heat rest oil in a frying pan. Add the chicken pieces and cook until brown on all sides; usually 6–8 minutes. Remove from the pan and set aside on a plate.

  • Dice the tomatoes and green chillies, make a puree, and set aside.

  • In a pan, add remaining oil, throw in the garlic ginger paste, and curry leaves.

  • Then add the onions and fry for 15 minutes or until golden brown, stirring regularly.

  • Once onion is cooked, pour the tomato puree and let it cook for 10 minutes stirring occasionally. If the sauce reduces significantly, add some water.

  • Mix well and add the chicken. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 5 minutes, or until tender.

  • The delicious chicken curry is ready and it can be served with rice or roti.

Aloo dum (Nepali potatoes curry)

Aloo dum is a very popular dish in Nepal. My mum used to cook it almost every day when we were little as both me and my brother were very spoiled and didn’t eat most of the other veggies except potatoes.

Ingredients

  • 4 medium potatoes
  • 1 onion sliced
  • 1 tablespoon of crushed ginger and garlic
  • 2 tomatoes diced
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seed
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon of coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon of chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 2 tablespoons of unflavoured yogurt
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoon of oil

Steps

  • Boil potatoes and cut into cubes.
  • Heat oil in a wok.

  • When oil is hot, add cumin seeds and let it fry for a few seconds.

  • Add onion in the wok and fry till they are brown.

  • Add diced tomatoes and turmeric powder and fry some more.

  • When the paste starts giving out oil that mean it is cooked so add the boiled potatoes to the wok.

  • Just toss potatoes around and add salt, cumin, chilli, coriander powder and a half cup of water and let it boil.

  • Now add the unflavoured yogurt and mix it well.

  • Take the curry out of heat and serve with rice or roti.
