Celebrating Christmas on board Carnival Spirit

Our cruise on Carnival was advertised as a Christmas cruise so obviously I was expecting the Christmas to be special on board.

As soon as we walked onto the ship, I could see that they had beautiful Christmas decorations everywhere. It actually felt like Christmas all the time we were on board.

New Caledonia (6)

Definitely, Christmas day was very special. We had sea day on the 25th of December so everyone was on the ship. They had announced the previous day that they were going to have special Christmas lunch so we were looking forward to that.

On Christmas morning, after a quick workout at the gym, we went to the buffet area for breakfast. Most of the staff and some of the cruisers were already wearing Christmas hats, ties, headbands and earrings. The environment was very festive and there were tables full of families enjoying the Christmas breakfast.

IMG_1043-tile-vertAll the dining areas had watermelons craved with figurines like, Merry Christmas, Santa’s face, flowers and other the Christmas decoration. Also there was an area where they built a gingerbread house, some snowmen and it looked really pretty.

IMG_1024 (2)We had our usual breakfast and as it was nice and fresh. When we were done with breakfast, we saw that a few staffs were craving something on a big block of ice.

We went back to our room and on the way back we saw many rooms door decorated with Christmas decoration. Actually, they were giving prizes for best-decorated doors.  Once in the room, we had a shower and went back to the buffet area again and was surprised to see this beautiful ice carving of Santa with his reindeers and it looked absolutely amazing.

The staffs on board worked really hard to make sure the ship had full Christmas vibe. The captain of the ship was walking around wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and we managed to take some photos with him too.

After admiring all the decoration on that floor, we went around to find more activates. Everywhere we saw people in Santa hats and red outfits. I felt like I was in a mall somewhere, not on a ship.

There were photographers capturing family photos with Santa and Christmas tree and there were families enjoying their time together. For me and AS, we didn’t want photos with Santa so we kept on roaming around until we found the hall where bean bag throwing competition was about to start. It was going to be Men Vs Women.

IMG_1120

I wanted to take part so went and had my name written down. After a few minutes, game started. 4 males vs 4 females.  They gave us 4 bean bags about 10 inches square and it had to go inside a board with a small hole around 15 feet away.

It was a fun game. The first few times, all my bags were either on the floor or on the board but once I got the hang of it, I scored a few points. It was entertaining for everyone watching as well but unfortunately, the male group won the game.

By that time, it was time for us to go to the restaurant (Empire dining room) for our Christmas lunch.

IMG_1135

When we arrived at our table, there were already Christmas crackers on the tables and the staffs were in a festive mood wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. Rest of the couples from our table arrived and we started the lunch.

New Caledonia (16)IMG_1141

They told us that they used to have Christmas dinner before but for the first time, they were organising Christmas lunch because that is an Australian tradition and they wanted us to enjoy an Aussie Christmas. It was really thoughtful of the management and staff because it was extra hard work for them to organise the special lunch.

New Caledonia (17) New Caledonia (16)

The menu was even more aussiefied with crusted lamb roast, prawns and pavlova on the menu. We loved the food and it was fun popping Christmas crackers and wearing the hat. I have to admit, they made us all feel special on the special day.

After lunch, both of us were so stuffed that we went to the upper deck and just relaxed on the lounge. We enjoyed the beautiful sunset on the horizon before going to the room to get ready for dinner.

Like every day, the Empire dining room served one of the best dinners and we were happy with the service and food.

IMG_1307

After dinner, special Christmas show was organised in the main hall (Pharaoh’s Palace) so we went there.

IMG_1342 IMG_1343 IMG_1351

The Christmas show was fun with Christmas carols from the singers and some kids, followed by Christmas song, Christmas story and many more entertainment and of course Santa Clause.

IMG_1357 IMG_1289

Overall, AS and I had a splendid Christmas on board Carnival Spirit.

IMG_1375

On the way to our room we had a quick stop at the casino and had some fun :).

New Year’s Eve Masquerade party

I always like themed parties. It creates a great party atmosphere and makes everyone seem different. I really wanted to have a birthday party for AS since we didn’t celebrate mine in a big way this year. But he was adamant that we don’t need another birthday party as on his birthday we were on board Carnival Sprit so instead I decided to throw a New Year’s Eve Masquerade party and I have to say we had a ball.

New Year 2013 (1)

AS was excited as well so he was in charge of cocktails and drinks. He did a great job, as everyone loved his Margarita.

New Year 2013 (5)New Year 2013 (2)

I did the decoration and had the banner that said Happy New Year 2014.

New Year 2013 (4)

I bought a gold colour mask that went well with my black dress and AS bought a sliver one.

New Year 2013 (14)

All our friends and family were wearing a variety of masks so it was a fun event.

New Year 2013 (11)New Year 2013 (13)

Everyone was at our place by 7pm so after eating the entrée we all went to The Brighton Beach for 9pm fireworks. We managed to be there on the beach on time for the fireworks even though there were thousands of people walking to the same direction and there was nearly no room to move on the pavements.

New Year 2013 (9)

It was a beautiful firework and it went for 20 minutes. The council must have spent heaps of money and I love the heart shaped design the fireworks made and other shapes as well.

New Year 2013 (7)-tile

After fireworks, we all were starving so dinner was served. We ate, danced and had AS’s surprised cake.

AS's Birthday (1)

It was almost midnight by then so we all gathered around the TV to watch Sydney’s firework. The Sydney Opera House and harbour bridge sparkled with tons of exploding fireworks unleashed at midnight as Australia was one of the first countries in the world to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.

New Year 2013 (12)

If anyone has missed it, here is the video, it is always so amazing.

After the fireworks, the music was still on so we were doing Macarena ,Mambo No 5 and all the other popular numbers. AS was dancing as well so it was a great evening.

New Year 2013 (8)New Year 2013 (6)

Few of our friends were staying over with us that night and by the time, we all went to bed; it was 3am on 1st of January 2014.

Hope everyone one had a great New Year celebration. Hope this year will bring lots of happiness, good health and great company to everyone.

Take care everyone,

Celebrating AS‘s birthday in the middle of the Pacific Ocean

On 28 of December, it was AS’s birthday and we had a sea day on the cruise. Since AS has been in Australia, he has been lucky enough to celebrate his birthday in different places every year. Three years ago, we were in Brisbane, two years ago, we were in Vanuatu, last year it was Nepal and this year it was in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

Before we even started our holiday, AS warned me not to embarrass him in from of lots of people in the ship by letting them know that it’s his birthday. I love to do all those stuffs but he is a very private person so I respect his decision. I promised him I was not going to do that and I would not buy him a cake either.

On the morning of his birthday, I work up, put the card I had for him in front of him and went to shower. When I came back, he was awake but he didn’t see the card. I wished him Happy Birthday and we went to shower. I moved the birthday card from the bed to the dressing table hoping he would see it when he comes out of shower and gets ready.

To my dismay, he didn’t see the card for another 10 minutes so I ran out of patience and gave him the card :). When I asked him why he did not see the he said he did not have his glasses on!

He read the card and hug me and thanked me for making him feel special. He was happy with the card and a watch, the one I bought before we left10884014-horz

As the cruise always served a lovely breakfast, we went for breakfast. When we opened the room door, we got a card for AS from the cruise. The breakfast was as usual awesome with too many options to choose from.

We just went to stroll around the cruise after the breakfast and I let him do the things he wanted to. I really wanted him to enjoy his day. As if everyone knew that it was AS’s birthday, the lunch that day was Chocolate Extravaganza.  Imagine AS’s happiness when we went to the dining room :).

Chocolate Extravaganza (4)

It is a chocolate buffet with items you can’t even imagine. I am sure AS was able to get “chocolate high” by just looking at those items. Just have a look on what they served. Lots of different chocolate items like chocolate wontons, chocolate cake, banana fritters, fudge , puddings , chocolate-dipped churros, home-made marshmallows, doughnuts , jelly candies, and fresh fruit that can be dipped into chocolate fountain and much much more.

Chocolate Extravaganza (5)Chocolate Extravaganza (1)

We had a lovely lunch and we went to watch a magic show. The magician was just OK but we had fun. When we came back to the room, we found a plate of cakes and chocolate covered strawberries left in the room. It was just perfect.

AS's Birthday (4)

It was “Elegant Night” that evening on the ship so it was a perfect opportunity for both of us to dress up for dinner.

AS's Birthday (10)

I wore my black floor length gown and he wore his purple shirt, purple tie and black pant with purple stripe. By then both of us were tanned and I have to admit, he was looking great and I feel blessed to have him in my life.

AS's Birthday (13) AS's Birthday (12)

As everyone was wearing their best evening dress, when we walked out from our room to the main hall, the hall looked amazing and it reminded me of the moment from Titanic when Rose (Kate Winslet) comes to the ballroom and  Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) sees her. Anyway, we had a great time walking around and taking photos and mingling with other guests and it was time to go for dinner.

AS's Birthday (11)

AS asked me again if he will get any surprise and I promised him that I hadn’t organised anything. So as usual we met other couples from our table. They wished AS Happy Birthday and then we started our dinner. The dinner was awesome with a 3-course meal. We were spoiled with choices of food and by the time for dessert I didn’t even want to eat anymore.

As we were conversing on the table, one of our new friends told me that she had informed the waiter that it was AS’s birthday and as we saw nights before that, everyone in the restaurant room would sing the happy birthday song once the cake is out.

AS's Birthday (8)  AS's Birthday (6)

I was glad that AS was getting the cake for his birthday. So after our dessert came, our waiter brought a cake with a candle for AS. AS was literally blushing when the waiter announced to the whole restaurant that it is his birthday and we all need to sing the song. So more than 100+ people sang happy birthday and he made a wish and blew the candle. I am glad AS enjoyed his cake and it was a happy evening for us.

AS's Birthday (5)

After dinner, we went to the show and it was just amazing night for both of us. AS had a great day in the middle of Pacific Ocean for his birthday.

Once we were back, I had organised a party at our place for New Year but I sneaked in a cake with the help of my SIL. When the cake came out and we all were singing happy birthday, AS was confused as it was few days past his birthday.

AS's Birthday (3)

I was so glad and he had no clue we were having a cake for his birthday. He made me promise not to do anything on the ship but I had made no promises for our home so it was my opportunity to make sure he gets a proper cake for his birthday.

AS's Birthday (7) AS's Birthday (1)

The cake was chocolate mud cake, AS‘s favourite and we all loved it.

AS's Birthday (2)

I am just happy that AS got two cakes for his birthday and he had a wonderful time both the days. I hope to celebrate many many of our birthdays together and with full of love.

AS's Birthday

Take care everyone,

Tummy tyre

Last night, we were watching TV after dinner. Hubby was snacking on tit-bits and I really wanted him to stop.

Me: “Stop eating otherwise you will get a tyre around your tummy.”

AS: “Ohoo, that is great so I can roll on the street and don’t need to walk.”

I couldn’t stop my reaction and we both ended up laughing.

Changing the way I exercise

I have talked about healthy eating and exercising multiple times in my blog. I really believe that healthy eating is a life style you choose and live with for the rest of your life. But at the same time as I grow older I am becoming more realistic.

My husband always reminds me that I can’t wish for a miracle with my body. So I am accepting the fact that as I grow older I need to exercise more to stay fit. For the last few months, I have a new goal, getting my body better for our cruise holiday. Keeping that in mind, I changed my exercise routine.

I used to normally exercise after work and during weekends but now, it has changed completely.

I realised that my one-hour lunch breaks have not been properly utilise. I used to walk in a park but it was not helping a lot so I decided to do intense exercise during that time. Therefore, I do not have to worry about exercise once I am home.

I have been running a couple of time a week, swimming a couple of times a week and playing tennis once a week. Some weeks I work out every afternoon while some weeks I do it 3-4 afternoons. Either way my body is getting a good workout during the lunchtime.

Birthday (12)

In addition, I realised once I started exercising regularly, I met other colleagues who exercise during the lunch break as well. Now I have a swimming partner twice a week, in a running group once a week and with a tennis group once a week. Not everyone one makes it every week but still it is so good to go and exercise with likeminded people. I also realised when I run or swim with other people, I tend to push myself further than when I exercise alone. I still exercise alone somedays like today I went running alone as everyone else was doing something else but exercising during lunch time seemes a great idea to me.

Now, it has been a few months so if I don’t do something during lunch time, I feel bad. Unless I have a lunch date with someone, which I try to have now and then to socialise, I will go and just run.

Also, I have been swimming with my hubby after work once or twice a week and that is also adding up.

I love yoga so at least once a week on weekends I am practicing yoga.

myoga

I don’t have to make excuses after work when I don’t exercise and have more time to think about dinner and other things in our life.

My body is slowly but surely getting where I went it to be. Wish me luck that I can keep this routine for a long time.

My new mantra, I did my best today. Tomorrow I will do better. 🙂

Take care and have a great week,

Leaving you with an interesting article from Huffington post by Sarah Klein.

This Is What Happens To Your Body When You Exercise

Whether you do it to lose weight, to reach a fitness goal or — dare we say it? — just for fun, exercise changes you.

There’s the red face and the sweating, the pounding heart and pumping lungs, the boost to your alertness and mood, the previously nonexistent urges to talk about nothing but splits and laps and PBs.

But while we all know that staying physically active is essential to a long, healthy, productive life, we don’t often understand exactly what’s happening behind the scenes.

We asked the experts to take us through — from head to toe — what happens in the body when we exercise. Neuroscientist Judy Cameron, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Tommy Boone, Ph.D., a board certified exercise physiologist, and Edward Laskowski, M.D., co-director of the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center spill the beans on what gets and keeps you moving.

Muscles
The body calls on glucose, sugar the body has stored away from the foods we eat in the form of glycogen, for the energy required to contract muscles and spur movement.

It also uses adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, but the body only has small stores of both glucose and ATP. After quickly using up these supplies, the body requires extra oxygen to create more ATP. More blood is pumped to the exercising muscles to deliver that additional O2. Without enough oxygen, lactic acid will form instead. Lactic acid is typically flushed from the body within 30 to 60 minutes after finishing up a workout.

Tiny tears form in the muscles that help them grow bigger and stronger as they heal. Soreness only means there are changes occurring in those muscles, says Boone, and typically lasts a couple of days.

Lungs
Your body may need up to 15 times more oxygen when you exercise, so you start to breathe faster and heavier. Your breathing rate will increase until the muscles surrounding the lungs just can’t move any faster. This maximum capacity of oxygen use is called VO2 max. The higher the VO2 max, the more fit a person is.

Diaphragm
Like any muscle, the diaphragm can grow tired with all that heavy breathing. Some argue that as the diaphragm fatigues, it can spasm, causing a dreaded side stitch. (Others argue a side stitch is due to spasms of the ligaments around the diaphragm instead, while others believe the spasms to originate in the nerves that run from the upper back to the abdomen and are caused by poor posture!) Deep breathing and stretching can alleviate the discomfort in the middle of a workout, and preemptive strengthening in the gym can ward off future issues.

Heart
When you exercise, heart rate increases to circulate more oxygen (via the blood) at a quicker pace. The more you exercise, the more efficient the heart becomes at this process, so you can work out harder and longer. Eventually, this lowers resting heart rate in fit people.

Exercise also stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, causing blood pressure to decrease in fit people.

Stomach & Intestines
Because the body is pumping more blood to the muscles, it takes some away from the systems and functions that aren’t top priority at the moment, like digestion. That can result in tummy troubles. Movement, absorption and secretion in the stomach and intestines can all be affected.

Brain
Increased blood flow also benefits the brain. Immediately, the brain cells will start functioning at a higher level, says Cameron, making you feel more alert and awake during exercise and more focused afterward.

When you work out regularly, the brain gets used to this frequent surge of blood and adapts by turning certain genes on or off. Many of these changes boost brain cell function and protect from diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s or even stroke, and ward off age-related decline, she says.

Exercise also triggers a surge of chemical messengers in the brain called neurotransmitters, which include endorphins, often cited as the cause of the mythical “runner’s high.”

The brain releases dopamine and glutamate, too, to get those arms and legs moving, as well as gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA, a prohibitive neurotransmitter that actually slows things down, to keep you moving in a smooth and controlled manner.

You’ll also likely feel better thanks to a bump in serotonin, a neurotransmitter well known for its role in mood and depression.

Hippocampus
This part of the brain is highly involved in learning and memory, and it’s one of the only sections of the brain that can make new brain cells. Exercise facilitates this, thanks to the extra oxygen in the brain.

Even when you stop exercising, those new brain cells survive, whereas many other changes in the brain during exercise eventually return to their normal state should you become less active.

Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus is responsible for body temperature, as well as salt and water balance, among other duties. As your body heats up, it tells the skin to produce sweat to keep you cool.

Pituitary Gland
This control center in the brain alerts the adrenal glands to pump out the hormones necessary for movement. It also releases growth hormones. As the body searches for more fuel to burn after using up your glycogen stores, it will turn to either muscle or fat, says Cameron. Human growth hormone acts as a security guard for muscle, she says, telling the body to burn fat for energy instead.

Kidneys
The rate at which the kidneys filter blood can change depending on your level of exertion. After intense exercise, the kidneys allow greater levels of protein to be filtered into the urine. They also trigger better water reabsorption, resulting in less urine, in what is likely an attempt to help keep you as hydrated as possible.

Adrenal Glands
A number of the so-called “stress” hormones released here are actually crucial to exercise. Cortisol, for example, helps the body mobilize its energy stores into fuel. And adrenaline helps the heart beat faster so it can more quickly deliver blood around the body.

Skin
As you pick up the pace, the body, like any engine, produces heat — and needs to cool off. The blood vessels in the skin dilate, increasing blood flow to the skin. The heat then dissipates through the skin into the air.

Eccrine Glands
At the hypothalamus’s signal, one of two types of sweat glands, the eccrine glands, get to work. These sweat glands produce odorless perspiration, a mixture of water, salt and small amounts of other electrolytes, directly onto the skin’s surface. When this sweat evaporates into the air, your body temp drops.

Apocrine Glands
This second type of sweat gland is found predominantly in hair-covered areas, like the scalp, armpits and groin. These sweat glands produce a fattier sweat, typically in response to emotional stress, that can result in odor when bacteria on the skin begin to break it down, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Face
The capillaries close to the skin’s surface in the face dilate as well, as they strain to release heat. For some exercisers, this may result in a particularly red face after a workout.

Joints
Exercising puts extra weight on the joints, sometimes up to five or six times more than your bodyweight, says Laskowski.
Ankles, knees, hips, elbows and shoulders all have very different functions, but operate in similar ways. Each joint is lined with cushioning tissue at the ends of the bones called cartilage, as well as soft tissue and lubricating fluid, to help promote smooth and easy motion. Ligaments and tendons provide stability.

Over time, the cushioning around the joints can begin to wear away or degenerate, as happens in people with osteoarthritis, the most common type of arthritis.
