My life in Australia

Exploring Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum

During our trip to Hobart, we decided to visit the Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum, a tribute to the legendary Antarctic explorer Sir Douglas Mawson and his team.

The Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum is the world’s only full-scale copy of a building from the heroic era of Antarctic exploration. Situated on the Hobart waterfront, it is rated by Trip Advisor as the No 1 Museum in Hobart.

The Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum in Hobart offers a range of ticket prices to accommodate different visitors. As of January 2025, the entry fees are as follows:

  • Adults (17 years and over): $15
  • Concession (seniors and students): $12
  • Vulnerable adults (with carers admitted free): $8
  • Children (6 to 16 years): $5
  • Children (under 6 years): Free
  • Family Pass (2 adults and up to 3 children aged 6-16): $35

From the moment we stepped inside, it felt like we were transported back to Mawson’s time. The replica of the hut was meticulously detailed, giving us a real sense of what life was like during the Antarctic expedition. As a family of four, we all found something to connect with, from historical displays to hands-on exhibits.

The kids were especially excited about the life-sized husky dog statues, affectionately named Patch and Duchess. They were quick to pose for photos and loved imagining how the real huskies helped the explorers navigate the icy wilderness. The statues sparked so many questions, and it was wonderful to watch their curiosity grow with every new story they learned.

Inside the hut, we got to see how the explorers lived and worked in such extreme conditions. The small bunk beds, the makeshift kitchen, and the limited equipment showed just how resourceful the team had to be. The kids were fascinated and kept asking how they managed to survive without the modern conveniences they’re used to (especially heating and snacks!).

The museum also featured interactive displays, videos, and artifacts that brought the story to life. One section, in particular, showcased the stunning aurora light displays that the explorers would have witnessed in Antarctica. The colourful and ethereal imagery left me in awe, and it’s made me even more determined to see the aurora in real life someday. It’s now firmly on my bucket list!

The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and happy to answer all our questions, making the experience even more engaging.

What stood out to me the most was how much the kids learned during our visit. They were captivated by the stories of survival, teamwork, and exploration. By the time we left, they couldn’t stop talking about Antarctica, the challenges faced by the explorers, and how huskies played such an important role in the expedition.

The Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum may be small, but it’s packed with information and detail. It’s a place where history comes alive, offering visitors of all ages a unique and meaningful experience. If you’re in Hobart and looking for an activity that’s both fun and educational, I highly recommend visiting.

Off We Go: Summer Adventures Await!

There’s something magical about the start of a holiday—the buzz of the airport, the excitement in the air, and the joy of embarking on a new adventure. As we packed our bags and headed to the airport, I couldn’t help but feel a wave of happiness wash over me. Traveling has always been my passion, and sharing this love with my kids makes it even more special.

The kids were just as thrilled as we were! From pulling their little suitcases to gazing in awe at the planes outside the window, their excitement was infectious. Boarding the plane, they eagerly took their seats, buckled up, and were ready for takeoff. Their joy during these moments reminds me of how much there is to appreciate in the little things—like watching the world from above or guessing how many clouds we’d fly through.

Traveling for the last 20 years has truly widened my horizons. I’ve explored over 30 countries, and while I’ve ticked off some incredible places from my bucket list, there’s still so much left to see and experience. Yet, despite all the adventures, the excitement of traveling never fades. Every journey feels like the beginning of something new—a chance to learn, grow, and make unforgettable memories.

Now, as I watch my kids embrace the joys of traveling, I hope they too develop a love for exploration. I want them to see the world, meet people from all walks of life, and understand the beauty of diversity. Traveling teaches us to enjoy life in its purest form, to be curious, and to cherish the world around us.

As we set off on this summer break, I look forward to all the fun, laughter, and memories waiting to be made. Whether it’s splashing in the water, exploring hidden gems, or simply enjoying family time together, every moment is a treasure. Traveling brings us closer, teaches us new perspectives, and fills our hearts with joy.

Here’s to the adventures ahead and a lifetime of exploration!

A Roaring Good Time at Sydney Zoo: Dino Adventures and Family Fun

We recently invested in an annual pass for Sydney Zoo, and it has been one of the best decisions for our family outings. The kids absolutely love it, and we try to visit as often as possible. On our last trip, the zoo had a dinosaur exhibition, which turned the visit into an unforgettable adventure for our little ones.

The kids were overjoyed as they walked among life-sized replicas of dinosaurs. My son, a budding dino enthusiast, amazed us with his knowledge, correctly naming most of the dinosaurs on display, including Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops, and Stegosaurus. Watching his excitement as he recognised each creature and shared facts about them was heartwarming. Both kids eagerly explored the exhibit, moving from one dinosaur to the next, thrilled to learn more about these prehistoric giants.

One of the best things about Sydney Zoo is its manageable size. Unlike larger zoos, this one allows us to complete a tour in just a couple of hours, making it perfect for young children who might tire out after too much walking. Despite its compact layout, the zoo offers an incredible variety of animals and experiences.

Along side the dinosaurs, we wandered through the regular zoo exhibits, where we enjoyed seeing lions, giraffes, and kangaroos. The kids particularly loved watching the meerkats play and seeing the cheeky monkeys swing from tree to tree.

Sydney Zoo truly caters to families, with plenty of shaded rest areas, a café with kid-friendly meals, and even a fun playground where children can burn off extra energy. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable, happy to answer the endless stream of questions from curious little minds.

What makes the annual pass even more exciting is that the zoo plans different themes throughout the year, ensuring there’s always something new to experience. We can’t wait to see what’s next and are looking forward to making many more memories.

If you’re looking for a family-friendly day out that combines fun and learning, Sydney Zoo is the place to be. For our dinosaur-loving son, it’s become his favourite destination, and we couldn’t be happier seeing him so thrilled. Here’s to more adventures at the zoo!

Family Fun at Sea World

Our visit to Sea World was everything we’d hoped for and more—a day filled with laughter, awe, and unforgettable family moments. From thrilling rides to adorable animals, there was something for everyone, and the kids were buzzing with excitement from the moment we walked through the gates.

We kicked off our day at Pirate Ride, and let’s just say it didn’t take long for us to fully embrace the water theme of the park! By the end of the ride, we were absolutely soaking wet, but the laughter and excitement made it all so worth it. It was the perfect way to start the day with a splash—literally!

Next, we headed to the Penguin Show, where we learned so much about these adorable little creatures. Seeing them waddle around and dive gracefully into the water had the kids giggling nonstop. It’s always a treat to watch animals up close, and this was no exception.

The Dolphin Show was an absolute highlight. Watching these intelligent and graceful creatures perform their synchronized jumps and flips left us all in awe. The kids couldn’t stop clapping and cheering, and I loved seeing their eyes light up as the dolphins showed off their incredible skills. It was a wonderful reminder of how amazing marine life is and why we need to protect it.

The Seal Show brought plenty of laughs and excitement. These playful performers had everyone entertained with their tricks and antics. The kids were mesmerised by their energy, and they’re still talking about how clever and funny the seals were.

For our little Paw Patrol fans, the Paw Patrol Show was like stepping into their favourite TV show. Meeting Chase, Marshall, and the gang made their day—they were starstruck! The interactive elements of the show kept them completely engaged, and I have to admit, I enjoyed it just as much as they did.

Of course, Sea World isn’t just about the shows—it’s also home to some amazing rides. The Storm Coaster had my heart racing, and the kids couldn’t get enough of the gentler options like the Sky Climb and Jet Rescue Junior. They were thrilled to be part of the action, and it was great to see their confidence grow as they tried new things.

We also made sure to visit the Polar Bear Shores and the Shark Bay Exhibit, which added a touch of wonder to our day. The polar bears were so majestic, and watching the sharks glide through the water was both thrilling and calming.

By the end of the day, we were tired but so happy. Sea World isn’t just a theme park—it’s a place where you can connect with nature, share joy with your family, and create memories that will last a lifetime. As we headed to the Sea World Resort, the kids were already asking when we could go back, and honestly, I couldn’t blame them. Sea World had captured all our hearts.

What’s your favourite memory of Sea World? Let me know—I’d love to hear your experiences! 😊

A Family Adventure to Somersby Falls: Embracing Nature on a Drizzly Day

There’s something magical about the sound of raindrops tapping against the leaves, the fresh earthy aroma of a damp forest, and the gentle mist that cloaks everything in a veil of mystery. Our recent trip to Somersby Falls in the Blue Mountains was just that—an enchanting blend of nature, adventure, and family bonding, all under a soft drizzle that added to the charm of the day.

We set off with our backpacks loaded with essentials—snacks, water, raincoats, and an adventurous spirit! Despite the drizzle, the kids were buzzing with excitement, and their curiosity about the waterfalls kept the energy high throughout the drive. The walk to the falls is relatively short and easy, though the rain made the rocks a bit slippery. A good pair of non-slip shoes was a lifesaver. The kids loved hopping over puddles and pointing out tiny streams trickling down the rocks, which had sprung to life thanks to the rain.

As we descended the stairs and heard the distant roar of the falls, we knew we were in for a treat. The sight of water cascading down the mossy rocks was breathtaking, even more so with the mist from the drizzle adding a dreamy effect. We spent hours exploring the area, and the kids were thrilled to spot small critters and interesting leaves along the way. The natural pools near the falls became a point of fascination—they dipped their hands in the cool water and watched the ripples dance across the surface.

The drizzle didn’t deter us; instead, it made everything feel more adventurous. We shared laughs as the kids tested their “rainproof” jackets and marvelled at the droplets that sparkled like diamonds on the greenery. After a while, we found a sheltered spot for a snack break, listening to the calming sound of the falls and soaking in the serene atmosphere. It was a reminder of how beautiful and refreshing it is to step away from screens and schedules to connect with nature and each other.

A few tips for anyone planning a similar adventure: wear waterproof jackets and sturdy shoes, pack light snacks, and walk carefully on slippery rocks, especially with younger kids. Most importantly, embrace the weather—a little rain adds to the magic.

The drizzle didn’t just make our trip to Somersby Falls memorable; it made it magical. Watching the kids explore with wonder and sharing simple joys as a family reminded us why we love these little adventures. If you’re looking for a day out that blends fun, relaxation, and a touch of nature’s magic, Somersby Falls is the place to be—even on a rainy day. In fact, especially on a rainy day.
