Another trip planned :)

I have great news; I am going to Kathmandu again. And yes there is a reason we are going, yet another celebration. My brother in law is getting married. I will be there in a months’ time and it will be a great time to see my parents and in law again. It has been a year since we are back from our last trip but I can’t wait to go again.

Our holiday has been approved at work and we have booked our tickets so it is all set, counting down the days now.

I have even started my shopping for gifts. Amazingly, we say, we will never do a big shopping for gifts each time we return from Nepal. But each time before we go there, we make a list of gifts. This time too the list is long with names of people we want to buy for but I am happy to buy as their smile is worth the trouble we go through. Looks like for the next few weekends that is all we will be going.

In addition, I will be buying things for my future SIL. I already bought things like perfumes, make-up and other items but still there are a few other things still on the list.

I have never met my soon to be SIL but we have chatted a few time on Facebook. She seems to be nice girl and I am sure she will make my BIL very happy.

Wedding always excites me and this time it is at home so it will a be really fun filled event  with lots of foods, music, dances, ritual and people. I will definitely report on everything.

As usual every time I plan to go to Nepal I have a long list of things to do and buy and I have never manged to cross off everything. I am hoping this time I will be able to do a lot.

I really want to buy some specific decoration items for our home here so every day I can see them and admire them. I am looking for one big painting (I am not very sure but still want to try before forking out money here) and some traditional masks.

I am also thinking I should look for some traditional cushions .

As usual, I need to buy lehengas and saris for the wedding and accessories to go with them. I am sure until the wedding is over, we will be extremely busy but I have a few weeks after the wedding when I can to do things that I like.

The top one is trekking somewhere in Nepal. I am not even sure that it will be possible, as trekking requires at least a week but I will try my best. My list has grown longer day by day so hope to tick off most of it while I am there.

Anyway looking forward to enjoying the company of my family and friends and be spoiled soon. Hope I might even meet a few of my blogging buddies there like last time.

Nepal’s ex-goddesses, Kumaris, to receive monthly allowance

I talked about Kumari, the living Goddess of Nepal here before.

Just sharing the recent news about the Kumari from couriermail here.

NEPAL’S former Kumaris, girls worshipped as living goddesses in a centuries-old tradition, are to be awarded a pension to help them readjust to normal life.

Ten former Kumaris will receive the monthly allowance of 10,000 Nepalese rupees ($111) from July for the next 10 years, Kathmandu Metropolitan City chief executive officer Laxman Aryal said.

“Although most of the Kumaris come from well-to-do families, they miss a vital period of their lives and often lag behind in our increasingly competitive society,” Mr Aryal said.

The council made the decision this week as part of efforts to help the girls who are worshipped as goddesses, but lose their special status once they reach puberty.

The tradition has continued despite the end of the Shah monarchy in 2008.

The living goddess lives in a palace-temple in ancient Kathmandu’s Durbar Square and is a major attraction for foreign tourists.

In 2008, Nepal’s Supreme Court ruled the living goddess should be educated and they are now taught inside the palace where they live and are allowed to sit their exams there.

I am glad that at least there is some progress in this matter because I think they deserve it and more for their sacrifice and their understanding during the years they are Kumari.

Nepal in TripAdvisor’s top travel destinations on the rise for 2014

If you are still thinking about where to travel in 2014, maybe you should consider going to Nepal as your next travel destination.

TripAdvisor, one of the world’s largest travel websites, announced the winners of its 2013 Traveller’s Choice Awards for Destinations on the Rise – aka the “most improved” awards of travel. It rates the places that have seen the biggest increase in positive reviews from travellers on the site over the past year and Kathmandu, Nepal has topped the list in Asia.

“Kathmandu is mystical and magical place, a trove of ancient structures that are enveloped in folklore. Ancient Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the heart of the city, home to the legendary Kasthamandap temple, courtyards, fountains and the old royal palace. Kathmandu is a terrific base for various Nepalese adventures and Himalayan treks. For a more spiritual journey, visit a peaceful yoga or meditation centre or enroll in a course at a Buddhist monastery.”

Apart from what Trip adviser states, Kathmandu has good weather, good food and cheaper accommodation to relax and enjoy your holiday. You can look at my blog to see that Nepal is very rich in culture and tradition and you will find nice people like me all over Nepal. 🙂

Once you have paid the most expensive portion of holiday, your flight ticket, accommodation, tours and food is comparatively cheap and reasonable. You can shop till you drop in Kathmandu or just visit one of the many UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu valley. You can take a short flight to Pokhara to paraglide or zipflyer or take a bus to Chitwan for an elephant ride, white water rafting in Seti river, trek to Annapurna Base camp or Everest base camp, or just visit one of the world’s most beautiful place, Mustang which was also featured in  Lonely Planet’s best in travel 2013 list. It’s your choice and you could pick from hundreds of exciting things to do.

Just google and you will find something you can do in Nepal. Hope to see in Nepal in 2014.

Nepal through to ICC World T20

Great news for all cricket fans in Nepal, Nepali Cricket team through to ICC World T20. :). I am so happy to see my Facebook wall full of supporter of Nepali cricket team.

Nepal joined Afghanistan and Ireland, becoming the third team to qualify for the World T20 2014 in Bangladesh with a last-ball win against Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi. It’s the first time Nepal will be heading to a global event.

Nepal entered the final over needing 13 to win and Sharad Vesawkar swung a six down the ground followed by an inside-edged four through fine leg. Vesawkar was back on strike to face the final delivery with scores level and pierced a packed ring through extra cover to send Nepal through to Bangladesh with a five-wicket win.

Chasing 144, Nepal got off to a solid start, but Hong Kong kept chipping away every time it appeared Nepal was about to seize control. Tanwir Afzal bowled opener Subash Khakurel behind his legs for 16 and Sagar Pun made 22 off 19 before he was pinned on the crease by a full delivery by Haseeb Amjad.

Gyanendra Malla and Paras Khadka came together and added 33 for the third wicket before Malla heaved Aizaz Khan to deep midwicket for 30. Atkinson kept Nepal off balance with a series of bowling changes as dot balls kept piling up to bring the equation to 32 off 20 balls for Nepal to win.

Khadka only struck two boundaries in his 46 off 39 and cleverly seized on ones and twos to anchor the chase. He offered a chance to Jamie Atkinson behind the stumps on the last ball of the 18th, but Hong Kong’s wicketkeeper-captain spilled it and in the process injured his right thumb before exiting the field for treatment. A front foot no-ball by left-arm spinner Nadeem Ahmed was slammed past the umpire for a boundary two balls into the 19th and it looked as though Hong Kong would crumble without their captain. However, Hong Kong erupted in the field when Khadka was run-out two balls later after changing his mind too late on a second run.

After sending Hong Kong in to bat, Nepal had bowled and fielded marvellously for the majority of the innings before a hiccup in the final two overs allowed Hong Kong to reach 143 for 8. Hong Kong had a handful of players cross 20, but none made it past 25. The dangerous Irfan Ahmed was the first of three wickets for seamer Jitendra Mukhiya, edging a short ball to Nepal captain Paras Khadka at first slip in the second over. Hong Kong captain Atkinson sliced Avinash Karn to point at the start of the fifth. The two bowlers shared five wickets between them.

The win also took Nepal to the semi-final of the qualifying tournament where they will meet Afghanistan.

“This is the biggest moment of our lives. Our childhood dreams have come true,” Khadka said. “I think the boys have worked really hard for this and been pushing it in the World Cricket League and the Twenty20 format. I think when it mattered, everyone contributed, and I am really glad we have qualified for the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014. The tournament is still not over. We are now in the semi-finals and most likely to play Afghanistan. So, it’s about time that we give them what they’ve been giving us all these years.”
