Exploring Hahndorf Academy Museum

🏛️✨ A little history, art and culture in the heart of Hahndorf!

While exploring Hahndorf with the family, we decided to visit the Hahndorf Academy Museum, and I’m so glad we did. After spending time walking along the main street, looking at the heritage buildings and enjoying the village atmosphere, stepping inside this beautiful old building felt like stepping into another part of Hahndorf’s story.

The building itself has such an interesting history. It originally began as a school in the 1800s and over the years has also been used as a Lutheran seminary, hospital, dental surgery and even apartments. Today it houses the Hahndorf Academy’s museum and gallery.

Inside, there was so much for us to look at — old objects, displays, artwork and pieces that gave us a glimpse into what life was like in Hahndorf many years ago.

One of the things that caught our attention was the collection of beautiful glass pieces and artworks. The kids were fascinated by the colours, shapes and details, and of course we had to stop and look at everything carefully. It was a nice reminder that museums don’t always have to be huge to be interesting — sometimes the smaller collections have some of the most fascinating stories.

We also came across displays relating to the First Nations people of the Adelaide Hills, including the Peramangk people, as well as stories and artefacts connected with the German settlers and early village life. It was lovely to have the opportunity to talk to the kids about the different layers of history connected to the place we were visiting.

I especially liked that the museum doesn’t tell just one story. It helps you understand Hahndorf from different perspectives — from the land and its First Nations history to German migration and the development of the village over time.

The kids were naturally drawn to the objects and displays, asking questions and trying to imagine what everyday life would have been like back then. For them, seeing real objects makes history feel much more real than simply reading about it in a book.

And I love those moments when a family outing becomes a little learning experience without anyone feeling like they’re actually doing schoolwork! 😂

We took our time wandering through the museum, looking at the displays and talking about the things that stood out to us. There is also a gallery with changing exhibitions, so there is always something different to discover.

What I really loved about this visit was how it added another layer to our Hahndorf experience. We had already enjoyed the food, shops, streets and beautiful heritage atmosphere, but learning a little more about the history made us appreciate the town even more.

And because I had visited Hahndorf about 10 years ago, coming back now with hubby and the kids has been extra special. I was seeing the place with completely different eyes — remembering my earlier visit while watching my own children discover it for the first time. ❤️

It’s funny how travel changes as our families grow. Places we may have visited years ago can feel completely new when we return with our children.

Hahndorf Academy was one of those unexpected little stops that made our day more meaningful. A bit of history, beautiful artwork and glass pieces, First Nations stories, old artefacts and plenty of questions from the kids — all in one beautiful heritage building.

Definitely worth adding to your Hahndorf wander if you want to see a little more than just the main street. 🌿🏛️❤️
