If you want to read more about him, you can do it here, here, here and here.

A 13 year old, Jeremy Miller, wrote a hand written note to Prabal Gurung which Prabal posted on his Instagram with the following note.

This melts my heart. The best note I have ever received. Who knew an affirmation for something I love doing would come from a 13 year old. @jerbear_fd601 you really made my day!!! Xo PG

So in reply Prabal sends him a shirt from his collection. Isn’t that sweet of him? Then Jeremy posted the following photos wearing the t-shirt. Prabal Gurung posted the following photo with a note in his Instagram.

Shellac nail polish

During my last holiday I really wanted to be low maintenance so I decide to go and do a Shellac nail polish manicure beforehand. I had heard so many ads about this polish that I decided to give it a go.

Shellac is the brain child of a California company called Creative Nail Design, more commonly known as CND. The company says it spent five years perfecting the product. Shellac is frequently described as a hybrid of the popular gel manicure.

According to the ads, the new polish is smudge-proof and lasts for weeks without chipping. That is what I was hoping for when I got it done.

It was actually quick. They just removed my old nail polish, did some trimming and added just a thin coat of polish on my nail. Then they let it dry for 10 seconds and put another coat on with two minutes between the two coats of colour and the top coat.

Then I went on my holiday.

But to my disappointment, my Shellac experience was not as I was promised.

My nail polish chipped on the very next day after I got it done. I was really annoyed but thought if I am careful, then it might last longer, as promised.

To my disappointment, this is what may nails looked like after 4 days.

And this is what it looked like after 10 days

My verdict: Not going to pay more for this as my normal manicure lasts longer than this.

When I went to the company website, CND (Creative Nail Design) says any problems with chipping, peeling, or nail damage are typically caused by someone who is not licensed, not properly trained or not following the manufacturer’s specific instructions for application and removal. You may also encounter people who claim they’re providing a Shellac manicure, but are using a different, “similar” product.

I am not sure what my salon was using, but they are usually fine with their other services so I don’t know what happened with this product.

Buying fake designer bags can get you arrested in Italy

When we were in Italy, we saw lots of illegal immigrants selling fake designer bags like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and Chanel in the street. You’ll see the vendors and their makeshift shops spread out on blankets everywhere in Venice. When the police come, they pack up and vanish. After the coast is clear, they set up again and are back in business.I think if you can name a brand, they have it. I had also seen these kinds of fakes in Thailand and Malaysia before.

When we were in Italy our guide warned us not to even talk to these vendors who sell these bags. Everywhere in the world if someone is selling illegal fake designer bags, the vendor is arrested and prosecuted while people who buy get away with a warning, but not in Italy.

In Italy, they fine you for buying these bags because they don’t want to arrest these illegal migrants. Italy has lots of illegal migrants because of the unrest in North Africa lately. The number is so high that the Italian government doesn’t want to arrest these people as it will cost them lots of money to follow proper process to deport them. They have to keep them in jail, feed them and follow a long legal procedure which means lots of money and resources in the process. The Italian government doesn’t want this headache so they have another policy.

They will issue fine for anyone caught buying these product on the spots which can range to thousands of dollars. They are hoping this will discourage tourist from buying goods from these illegal immigrants who in turn will stop income for illegal immigrants and finally they will leave Italy. But I have seen so many people buying the fakes from them. I think if you don’t go on a tour, no one will let you know that you can be fined. I didn’t see one sign during my whole trip mentioning anything about being fined for buying fake bags.

Here is one of that news from shortnews. com

Tourist Fined $1,450 for Buying Fake Louis Vuitton Bag for $10

65-year-old Austrian tourist Ursula Corel has been fined $1,450 for purchasing a $10 fake Louis Vuitton bag off a street vendor in Italy. Officers taking part in a crackdown on counterfeit goods observed the transaction through binoculars.

Corel says she knew the bag wasn´t real and purchased it “because it looked very nice”. She says she didn´t know it was illegal. Mayor Francesco Calzavara stood by the crackdown, saying they were trying to reduce demand and vendor numbers.

A local tourism organisation, alarmed by the prospect that the crackdown will drive away tourists, apologised to Corel and offered to pay the fine. The organisation is calling for warning signs and better communication with tourists on the issue.

I don´t think buying the bag was right but I don´t think fining the tourist is good idea either. I think there should be enough warning for tourist so they won’t risk buying them.

Imagine going on a holiday and having to pay $1000 unexpected fine which can easily ruin your holiday.

So if you are ever going to Italy, do keep this in mind.

Love you, Prabal Gurung

I know I blog about Prabal Gurung a lot but I just love him and his designs. I have written about him before here, here and here. There are so many good things happening in his life that I am glad that I can write so much about him.

As I told you before, one of my dreams is to wear his design and I really hope it will happen one day.

Yesterday, Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton was spotted wearing a Prabal Gurung dress for the State Dinner hosted by the President of Singapore, Tony Tan Keng Yam, at his residence, the Istana. She looked great in electric purple print dress, a modified version of a catwalk look from Gurung’s spring 2012 collection.

Prabal Gurung was born in Singapore and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Here are links to the media talking about Kate wearing Prabal Gurung in USA UK and Australia.

Recently he was also featured in Time Magazine in a section called 10 Questions. Here is the article.

Fashion’s new phenom Prabal Gurung on American couture, Paul Ryan’s ill-fitting shirts and obeying Oprah

You have one of the most highly anticipated shows at New York Fashion Week. Why should the rest of the country care?

It’s a billion-dollar industry that affects the country economically, socially and culturally. I make 98% of my collection in New York City and am generating jobs, so fashion isn’t just frivolous for me. I understand levity about it. I also understand the depth of it.

What makes one of your $3,000 gowns worth it?

It starts with the fabric, which comes from Paris or Italy and is produced from an old loom–so it’s protecting that heritage. It’s also my months of research and production work by seamstresses trained for more than 40 years. You’re saving American couture.

Michelle Obama has worn several of your dresses as First Lady. You once said you saw this as a success not just for yourself but also for your native Nepal. How come?

Nepal is a third world country caught between India and China. Often when people talk about that region. Nepal gets neglected. [By wearing my dresses] she told millions of people back home that all you need is a dream and dedication for things to happen.

Is it true that you decided to move to the U.S. because you watched an Oprah special about living you dreams? Are you still a big fan of hers?

Yes, she’s very aware of the platform she has. A lot of celebrities just earn. Nobody says you have to give back. You do it out of choice and that decision makes her who she is.

You always wear a white tee and jeans. Is that because you went to Catholic school?

I am constantly thinking about design, shapes, patterns and colours, so I just want to be more of a blank canvas. But there is a comfort in knowing what you’re going to wear and that probably comes from catholic school, where I wore a uniform for 10 years.

Paul Ryan has caught flak for his ill-fitting shirts. How would you make him over?

It’s a fun question, but I ‘m conflicted about answering it. I wish people would pay more attention to who he is and what policies he supports.

Your designs are being sold in J. Crew and you’ll be in Target soon. Do such diffusion lines cheapen your brand?

If you choose the right partners, it’s perfectly fine because you’re reaching out to a different audience. For every girl who sends me a letter or tweet saying she loves my designs but can’t afford them, these collaborations area a way of sharing my love of designs.

What do you think about Ralph Lauren’s outsourcing the production of the U.S. Olympics uniform to China?

There must be a reason they did it. I can’t speak on their behalf. I just hope the reason was good enough at the end of the day.

Fashion’s been criticised for the lack of diversity. As an Asian designer, do you feel a duty to change that?

I don’t but I am certainly aware of the lack of diversity. Fashion reflects society, though and an Asian countries get more powerful economically, you‘ll see more Asian models. I have a 6 year old niece who doesn’t look like the majority of girls on the covers of magazines. I hope that by the time she’s 16, the world will have changed.

Fashion is cyclical by nature but what’s one trend you never want to see to come back?

It saddens me to see the reality television shows that are getting so much fanfare that are a celebration of stupidity and the degradation of women. And those women are consistently wearing too short, too tight dresses. I hope the trend of aging gracefully returns.

How can you not fall in love with this lovely human being who has done so much in fashion as well as for Nepal.

Onesies: Fashion or Disaster

I am sure you know what onesies are.  We have seen this one piece clothing on babies for ages but guess what? It looks like onesies are coming for adult as well.

Onesies are made for babies initially to cover their feet and hand and keep them warm by covering all parts of the baby.  I really loved animal onesies for kids as they look so adorable as a bunny, bear, lion, cow etc.

Now it is available for adults as well as thick jumpsuit and all in one sleep suits in plain and patterned fabrics, with a wide range of colours. Check out some nice ones and not so nice ones too.

I am not planning to buy one but I do see them on sale everywhere. I don’t think I will be comfortable wearing it as a night suit as it will confine me.

Even Brad Pitt, Robbie Williams, Ryan Thomas, Peter Andre were caught wearing one. Do you like onesies on them?

I certainly think onsesise should be left for babies or at home when you sleep. Some dress up parties may be ok but not for everyday wear.

So what is your thought on Onesies? Would you buy one or already have one? Do share  🙂
