There is Chhori inside

I have introduced my nephew here before. He was one of the babies who I got to watch closely as he grew up. I was there when he was born, during his chhaiti, nwaran pasni and every birthday. He is going to be 4 years soon and I can’t believe how quickly he is growing up.

Now we have Chhori around so he seems even bigger in front of her.

Looking at kids, we are reminded how innocent they are.

I must be the only person around my nephew who he remembers going from no tummy to big tummy while I was pregnant. Then Chhori was born. So he got the concept that when someone’s tummy is big, Chhori comes out.

my pregnancy

In the beginning I didn’t understand what he meant when he used to point out to anyone’s tummy and said “Chhori, Chhori”.

But now I do and it is very funny. So if you have a bit of tummy no matter whether you are a man, woman, young or old, he will point to your tummy and say, “Chhori Chhori”. That means he thinks you are pregnant and Chhori will come out of that one day.

My SIL also had to explain this to his childcare teacher as he kept on saying “Chhori” every time he saw the tummy.

Gold bless the innocence of a kids. Don’t know when we turned to be mean selfish human beings from those innocent kids.

Do share similar incidents about your kids/grandkids. I am sure there are many interesting ones out there.

Take care everyone,

Life’s small pleasures

There are moments in life that makes you smile and I love those moments. I think it is the small moments like this that make life truly amazing. Here are some moments in my life making me a happier person.

The love between generations

My brother posted this photo in Facebook, my nephew kissing my dad (laptop screen). They were Skyping and he saw my dad on the other side and kissed the screen. How cute and heart touching. I am sure my parents are overjoyed.

my nephew

My parents are really enjoying their first grandson and it is really nice to see my nephew loving them back unconditionally.

The Lion King musical

I am normally skeptical about musicals but we decided to go and watch when we read so many raving reviews about The Lion King.

The Lion King (2)

The show tells the tale of Disney’s “The Lion King” through acrobatics, dance, music and puppetry. Based on the 1994 animated film, the musical follows the adventures of Simba, a lion cub, as he struggles to accept the responsibility of adulthood and his destined role of King.

The Lion King (4)

We loved the 2 and half hours of amazing performance with singing, dancing, brilliant costumes and breath taking stage settings. I highly recommend this show to everyone especially if you have kids over 5 years old who know The Lion King story.

Discovering yummy food

I was starving after our show yesterday and was walking around looking for place to eat. We like the adventure of trying new food in new places and found this nice Malaysian place. It didn’t look much different from outside but the food was just amazing.

nasi lemak

We had Nasi lemaka and Mee goreng and both AS and I enjoyed the food. The Nasi lemak was so perfect that we decided to order take away for our lunch today. This was a discovery of some great food 🙂

Loving hubby

Knowing deep down that you truly matter to someone else is one of the happiest feelings in the world. My hubby has shown that to me time and time again. Recently I have been sick due to cold and flu and he has been so amazing. I become an annoying bi*ch when I am sick and I know that. Even when I try my best not to be, I cannot help it.

But hubby was there all the time taking care of me, making me feel better even though I was giving him a hard time. He was understanding, caring and looking after me that my demon died after a while and I was grateful to have someone in my life who cares for me so much.

Making him smile

I decided last week to cook a nice meal for hubby. That day I decided to make an extra effort so cooked rice, chicken, vegies, achar as well as baked a cake for desert. It took me a couple of hours to accomplish what I wanted to do but it was all worth it when I saw his smile when he was eating dinner. He just loved my cooking and I love to see his happy face when he eats.

Parents love

Even though I have been living away my parents’ home for more than a decade now, I just love the feeling when I talk to my parents. We Skype every week and it feels like we have never been apart. My mum shares everything with me from what she cooked for dinner to what she did, bought, went, talked, watched and my dad still talks about finance and household. It really makes me feel so close to them and still a part of the family.

I guess for parents, no matter where the kids are and how old they are, they still know how to make them feel special and my parents do that every day without expecting anything is return. Thank God for such wonderful parents who made me who I am today and making me stronger every day.

A million thanks to God for making my day right with reminders of what is truly important.

Please share your life’s small pleasure and have a great day.

Nirbuni for my nephew (second birthday)

I swear it feels like yesterday that I told you I had a new man in my life (my li’l nephew) and gosh it has been two years now. Even though he was born in 18 July, we celebrated his birthday on 26th of July which was determined by his birth chart and our own Nepali calendar.

Since his birth, he has given joy to everyone including his parents, us, my parents and my sister in law’s parents. When he was visiting last month to Nepal, he was the apple of the eye and was spoiled rotten by everyone.

Strangely, for reasons unknown and out of traditions handed down from generation to generation, the first birthday of a child is not celebrated by Newars. When a child is born, he will have chhaiti, nawaran then pasni. After pasni, the big celebration is second birthday, which is known as Nirbuni in Newari.

According to tradition, we make Yomari every even birthday (2, 4, 6, 8, 12) until a child turns 12. Yomari is a delicacy of the Newars. It consists of an external covering of rice-flour and an inner content of sweet substances such as chaku (Molasses).

yomari

During Nirbuni, a big puja is performed and the child is given a garland made out of two yomaris. The child is also given tika and sagun and prayed to ward off evil spirits from the child’s body. If we were in Nepal, relatives would come along with gifts and sweets for the kid. Therefore, this birthday was a big deal for us.

We started Saturday making yomari and sagun. With the help of our cousin it was done and then the puja started. My nephew was good during the puja as he sat on his dad’s lap while I perform the puja.

Nirbuni (12)I am not expert on performing the puja but this is what I did.

  • First I gave Nasala, a few drops of water, in the palm of the right hand of my nephew to sprinkle some into his mouth and the rest over his body for purification.
  • Then I put tika on Lord Ganesh with water, rice, flowers, and vermilion powder as well as a plate of sagun in front of him.
  • Then I gave water, rice, flowers, and vermilion powder to my nephew to worship the Lord Ganesh and also to all the God and Goddess by throwing the rice towards the ceiling.
  • Then I placed tika on his forehead and put a flower on his head.

Nirbuni (14)Nirbuni (11)

  • Then I placed the Yomari mala followed by flower mala.

Nirbuni (13)

  • After that I put bits of rice, radish, coins, cucumber in a small container and poured them on his head. This is believed to take all the evil spirits away from him. I did this three times.

Nirbuni (8)

  • Then,I gave Sagun to him. For Sagun, you put a plate of egg, bara (lentil cake), meat (chicken), a piece of giner and fish in the right hand and yogurt in the left hand.

Nirbuni (9)Nirbuni (15)

  • Once the process is finished with my nephew, I gave tika to the rest of the family, followed by sagun.

My parents and my SIL’s parents were on skype watching the ceremony. They were happy to watch all the ceremony even though they are so far away.

I also took tray of fruits, biscuits and a three piece suit for him as a birthday gift.

Nirbuni (10)

He looked really adorable in the suit.

Nirbuni (5)Then there was a party in the evening. I did the decoration and was happy with the result. It was a fun party with lots of kids.

Nirbuni (7)

The house was chaotic in a good way for the rest of the evening where kids ran, laughed , danced and played.

Nirbuni (3) Nirbuni (2)We had a nice cake for him and the food was catered so everyone enjoyed the day. It was such a fun day and the little man was very happy with all the attention and gifts.

Nirbuni (1)

On Sunday, I baked cupcakes for him to take to his childcare to celebrate his birthday. The childcare request simple individual cupcakes so I baked them myself.

Nirbuni (6) Nirbuni (4)Overall, it was a great nirbuni celebration for my nephew.

Wishing little man all the happiness of this world.

Last week of Autumn

Last Saturday was the last day of autumn and winter is officially here.

On Friday after work, we decided to go to eat at our local Vietnamese restaurant. I am a big fan of their rice paper rolls so we ordered that with quails and had Vietnam’s style fried rice. The food was nice and we both loved it. It was a great start of the weekend and we were relaxed walking back home. Sometimes not having to cook seems to take so much stress out of our life :).

On Saturday morning, I went for my usual run. I normally run with a my friend of mine and it is so easy to go the distance when you have company. We ran for over one and half hours and was glad that my step count reached over 11,000. That really made my morning as I am still counting my steps every day. It was drizzling at one point and I just loved the rain. I got to run in the rain after ages and it was quite refreshing. One of the reasons I love this walking track because we get a great view of the beach no matter what time of the year it is. It is always so rewarding.

Beach

After the run, we had our normal breakfast and waited for my SIL to drop off my nephew. We were babysitting for the afternoon and it was exciting for us. My nephew has grown up so much (gonna be 2 years next month) and is very cheeky. If he makes any mistake, he goes around and kisses everyone so no one will scold him. We had fun watching him, playing with him and running round with him.

In the evening, my SIL picked him up so we decided to go to city. It had been a sunny afternoon so it was the perfect evening to go and watch Vivid Sydney. I will share more pics from the day in another post.

Sunday started very slow as we had no plans. AS was still asleep and as it was cold outside so I decided to stay in bed and paint my nails. I normally do that once a week and I am learning to do it differently this each week. Here is what I ended up with.

nail

When I was almost done, AS work up; I wanted to get out of the bed too but AS asked me to stay in bed and he will fix breakfast for us. I really like these gestures from him and having a lazy and spoiled weekend makes me feel cheerful. I reminded him that we have hardly anything left in the fridge so maybe we need to out for grocery but he assured me we are OK. Therefore, I watched an episode of Downton Abbey while he cooked breakfast. At the back of my mind I was wondering what we are having for breakfast as I knew we were out of bread.

So after almost an hour in the kitchen, AS called me and he served me this for breakfast.

breakfast

Yes we had samosa and deviled eggs and tea. We also had some Jeri (sweets) to finish off the breakfast. I am very pleased as he used what we had to cook and I have to admit he is becoming better and better every day in the kitchen. In addition, he is so romantic and caring 🙂

It was raining in the afternoon so we stayed in, watched a movie and relaxed. By evening I was over with the indoors and stared to become grumpy and of course, my knight in shining armour came to the rescue again. He got a pair of socks for me and asked to put it on. The nhe started a salsa tutorial on YouTube and that was the start of our fun evening in.

AS and I had taken salsa classes before but separately so it was so much fun to learn again and practice together. As salsa dancing can be very intimate, I enjoyed it a lot. After an hour dancing I was in a happy mood as we had so much fun.

I have to admit he is a very good partner as you need male partner to lead and he was doing an excellent job.

Hope you guys had a great weekend too.
