Different jobs I did

When I was talking to some of my friends and family recently I realised that there are so many of them who think I have an easy life, good family, supporting husband, good home, good job etc. I am very happy to have a good life and don’t want it to change at all.

However, I think people forget that even people who have a good life now has had to work hard to get where they are. Most of them have known me only for the last 5 years or so so they have no ideas how hard I have worked for a long time to get where I am now. There were times when I used to do full time university and part time jobs and used to work 7 days a week.

I always had my mind set that I would never bother my parents for money once I left Nepal so always did my best to earn the tuitions fee and living expense. I really do not want to say much to those people so I just smile and thank them who call me “lucky”.

Most of you know that I work in IT now but before this job I worked a variety of jobs during my university when I was a student.

Anyway listing some of the fun and not so fun jobs I have ever had.

Tutor

I think teaching was in my blood as my mum was a teacher. From a very young age I used to tutor my brother but around when I was in year 6, I used to tutor a lot of neighbours’ kids and relative’s kids. By the time I was in year 10, I was earning some pocket money tutoring which was great for me.

Tutoring started because I wanted to help a few kids I knew with their homework. I got a lot of pleasure doing that but as the number of my students increased, some of them offered me money and that is how I earned my first wages. 🙂

Waiter (café/restaurants)

I got my first job in Australia as a waiter in a restaurant. It was not bad as there were people who were nice and taught me everything from how to open a wine bottle to how to make a coffee. I also worked in a few cafes after that.

Hunger Jack’s (Burger king)

This was another job I started very early when I came to Australia. I think I got hired even though I had no experience only because I was under 18 and they could pay minimum wage. I really learned a lot from this job and it was a stepping stone for me to learn lots of things regarding customer service.

I still remember the day I was asked to clean the table outside after the customer left. Having never worked in Nepal, I was disgusted to pick up after the customer. I had tears in my eyes thinking why had left Nepal for that.

Thinking about it now I am very grateful that life taught me so many things in Australia; which I would have never learned if I lived with my parents’ protection in Nepal.

This is the job which also taught me how to mop. I was very sloppy in the beginning as I was not very strong to dry the mop and there were other staff who helped me but it was a great learning experience.

Check out chick/supervisor

I work as check out operator for a while for a big supermarket chain. It was a fun job most of the time. After few years, they promoted me to be supervisor and it was fun. Managing 20+ people at the time was not easy but I had fun most of the time. I was so young while most of them were older than me and it used to cause problems sometimes. But overall I had fun working there though it had its own ups and down.

Sales assistance (Fashion)

This was my summer job one year when I was looking to earn extra money. I worked for a leather shop where they sold jackets, bags and shoes. I then learned how much mark up all these stores had. I also learnt the trick that the SALE most of the time are scam to lure the customers in.

It was an easy job but boring at times too.

BBQ Chicken shop assistance

This started as a summer job as well but I stayed longer. The job itself was alright but in summer, the place is like a sauna and so hot that it was hard to breath sometimes. I did get to eat lots of yummy food they sold but it was a hard one.

Sales (door to door)

I was looking for extra money one summer and decided to give it a go at door-to-door sales as they promise big money. I lasted only one day in the job, as it was so awkward to knock on some stranger’s house in the middle of their routine and offer to change their phone service provider. I didn’t like the job straight away but I still worked the whole day as I didn’t want to leave in the middle of the day. Never goona do it again.

Sales assistance (Car hire)

I worked as a sales assistance at a car hire company as part time staff for a while. It was an OK job that payed good money and the hours were good.

Web designer

This was my first job out of university and I was so excited when I got the full time web designer job. But to my dismay the job turned out to be more admin than web designer. As I was the newest person in the office, I was asked to do all the small jobs and was never given opportunity to use my skills properly. I left the job in a few months when I realised that I had no future in that company.

Lecturer

This is the most satisfying job I have ever held. It was such a pleasure to teach a room of full of students. And it was even more rewarding to see them doing well in exams showing they had learnt what I had taught them.

There were times when the students were older than me and, they didn’t want to take me seriously but those issues were easily resolved when they saw that I was good at my job.

Even till today, I bump into many students who I had taught and it always makes me smile when they come and talk to me.

I still miss the job satisfaction this job provided and would love to go to this profession one day in the future.

I am sure there are a lot of you out there who have worked harder than I did but I still feel I have done my fair share of hard work in my life to be where I am today. I hope I will be called “lucky” the rest of my life and I will have no problems saying thanks to everyone all the time.

Please share the different odd jobs you have held in your lifetime.

Take care ,

Anniversary celebration @ The Black by Ezard

First of all, thank you everyone for your wonderful wishes. I am excited to report back that we had an awesome day.

I have to admit taking a day off to celebrate the anniversary was a great idea as we were able to stay in bed till 9 am. I was awake before 7 am but it was nice not to worry about the time and spend more time in bed in the cold winter morning. I just cuddled with AS on the bed.

It was even nicer when AS gave me a nice and sweet card. I loved what he wrote on it and you can say I was touched.

To M,

The love of My life,

My past, My present,My future

Always & forever

AS

anniversary card

As you can see my AS is a man of few words but when he writes, he makes it count :). I just loved it.

I can see that as the years have passed, we became more compatible and stronger as a couple. We know each other better and we know what to do to please each other. We fight less and get annoyed less. If we fight, it doesn’t last long like before and we both understand each other a lot better. I have to give most of the credit to AS for sure. He brings out the best in me every day.

Park (3)

We had a lazy breakfast and decided to go out for lunch. Before that, we stopped at a park and spent some time there. It was a windy afternoon but we still had fun in the sun.

Thai was on the menu for lunch and it was nice and filling. I was again thankful that we had a day off as we did not need to rush. We took our time, enjoyed the food and went home to change.

We had dinner reservation at the restaurant called Black by ezard.

Black by ezard is by Melbourne chef Teage Ezard, at The Star casino. Ezard is the creative force behind the two hat restaurant ezard and Asian street food diner Gingerboy. The venue is cool and slick, a mix of elegant booth seating and leather upholstered seats, fronted by floor-to-ceiling glass windows that look onto Pyrmont Bay.

We were given a table with a window view. We could see the beautiful Sydney city in evening light.BLACK by ezard (7)We ordered drinks first. I had ORANGE – Angostura Bitters, Passionfruit, Carbonated Natural Spring Water mocktail and AS had a beer, Lord Nelson Three Sheets.

BLACK by ezard (2)

Before our drink, we were served complimentary brioche with butter and volcanic black salt. It was just delicious with chunks of the warm, buttery bun and inky black sea salt.

BLACK by ezard (9)

My mocktail came shortly with AS’ beer and we both were happy with our choices.

When faced with a dilemma over what to order, the best thing to do is share. So AS and I decided that we are going for three-course meal but would share all the dishes and it was a good decision.

We stared with mushrooms; a warm salad of exotic mushrooms, rocket leaves, brioche crumbs, parmesan and pork hock, crisp fried, nashi pear, radish, yuzu and green chilli caramel.

BLACK by ezard (11)BLACK by ezard (6)

To my surprise I loved the mushroom more than pork. It was so tasty and full of flavour. Also the portion size was really good for up class restaurants like this.

It was followed by gnocchi, handmade potato, roasted chestnuts, black cabbage and ocean trout with crispy skin, cauliflower, heirloom carrot, caper and lemon sauce for main.

BLACK by ezard (5)BLACK by ezard (3)

The ocean trout looked and tasted great with lots of fanciful accompaniments. Gnocchi was very enjoyable with black cabbage.

By this point, I was stuffed – I was wondering why I had decided on a three course meal as there was more to come.

Of course, I can never skip chocolate dessert when I am with AS so we had chocolate caramel and chocolate custard, peanut butter mouse, wood grilled banana sorbet as well as lemon olive oil and lemon cake, lemon curd, poppy seed cream, frozen yogurt.

BLACK by ezard (4)BLACK by ezard (10)

We had mentioned that it was our anniversary during the reservation and we were happy that they remembered this and so in a wonderful show of hospitality, our dessert plates had ‘Happy Anniversary’ piped in melted chocolate.

BLACK by ezard (8)

Desserts tasted wonderful, super rich chocolate and peanut butter mouse and the lemon cake was surprising yummy in every bite. I only left some poppy seed cream behind because I was going to explode if I had another mouthful.

The service, while quite good for a restaurant in general, falls somewhat short of hatted service.

I noticed that every time we go to a hated restaurant, the wait staffs make you feel so special.  There were three of them looking after us making sure everything was perfect. I was telling AS that it must be that great feeling you have when you have you own butler like in Downton Abbey 🙂

Overall, I found Black by ezard an amazing dining experience that is everything you would want and expect from a restaurant of this level with impeccable service. Both of us were happy when we left the restaurant.

After that we went to The Star casino for some fun.

It was such a perfect day for us with amazing food and lovely company.

Till next time, take care

Happy Third Anniversary my darling husband

Today is our wedding anniversary. Like every anniversary, I am writing a letter to my dear hubby.

My dearest AS,

I can’t believe that it has been three years of our union because it feels like only yesterday that I met you again and I started believing in forever. Now that we are together, I want to believe in eternity.

I am glad we have made it so far and I am sure we will go far as we love this journey that we are in together. Every year our anniversary becomes more and more special as every year seems to bring more and more happiness and priceless memories.

I couldn’t have done anything without you by my side. Since I met you, my life has never been the same. Thanks for making it better and happier. Even though we are supporting different teams during FIFA world cup, I know that you are happy when my team wins and vice versa. (You know that my team goona win the cup 🙂 ). Despite our differences, I always have fun when I am with you and that is the most important thing and the most precious moments of my life. At least we agree on one thing that The Games of Thrones is the best series ever.

When I feel sad I turn to you for support and when I feel happy I turn to you to celebrate  because I know you will be there for me as my partner and guide. I know I don’t say it often but I want to thank you for all the love and care, for all the moments we shared, which I truly treasured. Happy Anniversary, my love!

All my love, now and always!

Yours M

30 Days list

How many times has it happened to you that you buy something and as soon as you come home you realise that you don’t like it or you don’t need it. Sometimes you can return them but others you are stuck with. It happens to me a lot and I get annoyed for not being smarter with my buying.

I like something in the shop after trying it on and checking it properly so I happily give my credit card only to be disappointed in it after I come home.

So I and AS made a pact, if we are spending more than $100 items doesn’t matter what it is, we will keep them in our 30 days list. After 30 days if we still feel like we want that item then we will go and buy it.

We read it somewhere and thought it might work out for us and save us some money in the process.

I have a few items in the list already and waiting for the 30 days to pass.

Looks like I might buy one of the item but the others I can easily give them a pass.

What do you think of our 30 days list idea? What do you do to stop yourself buying things on impulse? Please share your ideas here.

Take care,

Australia won the World Cup and the weekend update

I know FIFA World Cups is still underway (I am not crazy :P) and I know that Australia lost its first match against Chile but that is not what I am talking about here.

Australia is the world champions once again, defending their Hockey World Cup title with a 6-1 demolition of the Netherlands. 😀 😀 😀

Australian hockey team also known as the Kookaburras played the most dominant performance of the tournament and gave Australians a reason to celebrate :).

Now back to the soccer world cup, I enjoyed heaps of soccer last weekend. It was great to be home and watch the games. Saturday started early for us as there were a few games on but the very important one at 8am was Chile vs Australia.

It was so disappointing to watch 2 goals from Chile in the first 15 minutes. Seriously, every goal was so painful but Australia did still really push them hard. Then the magic happened, Tim Cahill’s goal with a brilliant header gave some hope back to the Aussies.

There were a few opportunities for Australia in the second half like Cahill (twice) and Mathew Leckie, both headed over during the second half, while Mark Bresciano struck a sweet far-post half-volley that was saved by Claudio Bravo.

Australia went down to Chile 3-1 and I am sad because Australia played really well. We will take on the Netherlands next on Thursday morning. I know Netherlands are good after watching their game with Spain but there is still some hope.

After the game on Saturday, I made a big breakfast with bacon, hash browns, beans, mushroom, eggs, bread and tea. It was more like a brunch than a breakfast and it kept us full for a long time.

big breakfast

The plan for the rest of the afternoon was to clean the house but our friends called to check if we were interested to go to eat Newari food for lunch. We couldn’t resist so we went to Bhancha to enjoy lunch with them. We ordered Fokso fry, Nhyapu (brain fry), jhol momo, choila and chatamari. The food was yummy and I had fun with their daughter.

cholia Fokso fry jhol momo

After a very satisfying lunch, we went to the beach again. We wanted to give our failed walk from last weekend another try and this time there was no rain.

me

It took us over 90 minutes (over 10,000 steps) to do that walk but it was one of the best things we did for the weekend. The sunset was just beautiful and AS and I talked the whole time.

sunset

As the lunch was so filling, AS had salad for dinner and I had some fruits and that was the end of Saturday.

Sunday was planned as a lazy Sunday so we had late breakfast and caught up on some TV shows. I have to admit I wasted many hours watching mindless things on YouTube instead of cleaning the house. So it was already 2pm when I went to the kitchen to make lunch for the day and for the following day. I made an easy chicken couscous, which turned out nice.

After that we Skyped with our parents; it is always nice to catch up with them. By the time we were done with both the family, it was almost the end of the weekend.

Of course, we watched more soccer this morning. Go Argentina 🙂

How was your weekend? Hope you had heaps of fun too.

Take care,

M from nepaliaustralian
