Our Story – Honeymoon Trip To Vietnam – Part 49

This is a continuation of my previous posts. Please read the previous posts here.

When we were planning our honeymoon, me and AS had different ideas on where we wanted to go. I always wanted to go to Greek Islands (Santorini) but AS wanted to go to Hawaii. But as AS couldn’t take more than a month off from work and our wedding took so many days, we couldn’t go to either of the places.

Anyway after a few discussions we decided on Vietnam as it would be on our way back from Nepal. But honeymoon was off to a rough start. Read about what happened even before we land in Vietnam here.

When we got off in Ho Chi Minh airport it was very hot and humid. We took a taxi and went to our hotel. I was praying for rest of the holidays to be incident free as the headache we had before we reached Vietnam was enough for one holiday that as well on our honeymoon.

The room was nicely decorated and we had a buffet breakfast every day. They had lots of things to choose from like toast and cheese or rice, Pho, noodles, varieties of eggs, salads, yogurt and all kinds of pastries. Ho chin min (10)

We booked trips that took us around the city and we went to churches, a Presidential palace, and museums. We also took a trip to the Mekong Delta, Cu Chi tunnel, and Cai Dao temple.

Ho Chi Minh city

Ho Chi Minh (formerly Saigon) is a fast paced city with a unique mix of French colonial architecture, Chinese influences, a modern entrepreneurial spirit and numerous temples.

During this tour, in the morning, we visited the historic Reunification Palace and War Remnants Museum. The tour continued to Ho Chi Minh’s finest examples of French colonial architecture with a visit to the Notre Dame cathedral and Post Office.

Cu Chi Tunnels

The tunnels of Củ Chi are an immense network of connecting underground tunnels located in the Củ Chi district of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie much of the country.

We decided to do tour of the tunnel and it was a great place to visit.

Cu Chi Tunnels (2) Cu Chi Tunnels (4)

The Cu Chi tunnels were built by local fighters during the Indochina conflict as a base from which the Viet Cong could operate from close to the Southern Vietnamese capital. Initial construction started in 1948 when the Viet Minh required somewhere to hide from French air attacks and by 1965, the Cu Chi tunnel complex was estimated to consist of 200km’s of tunnels.

It included, hospitals, schools, meeting rooms, kitchens and sleeping quarters. Life was difficult for the inhabitants and to protect against outside intruders bobby traps were laid throughout the complex.

We started the day with exploring the Cu Chu Tunnels and learning more about the courage & ingenuity of the inhabitants. We also learned about the conditions the Vietnamese people lived in, the hardships they faced and the amazing ingenuity employed to maintain life in the tunnels

Mekong Delta Discovery

Our day started with 2.5-hour journey, by air-conditioned mini-coach to the Mekong reason. At times, I thought I was in Nepal when I saw acers and acers of green fields with rice paddy.

The Mekong is the region in south-western Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of south-western Vietnam of 39,000 square kilometres (15,000 sq mi).

It is a water world where boats, houses, restaurants and even markets float upon the innumerable rivers, canals and streams that flow through the region like arteries. At times you can quite simply lose sight of land.

On this tour we were lucky to explore the villages and islands in a private long tail boat ride along the Mekong River.

We loved our lunch at Diem Phuong Restaurant where we had one server on standby to peel our prawns and make us fresh rich paper rolls. We also tried fresh coconuts water other exotic fruits.

Cao Dai temple

Just outside Tay Nihn and 60 miles northwest of Ho Chi Minh City is the Great Temple or Holy See, the center of the intriguing Cao Dai sect. Cao Dai is a syncretist Vietnamese religious movement that incorporates aspect of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism and even Catholicism.

The Cao Dai Temple (as it is more commonly known) was begun in 1933 in a unique architectural style that reflects its blended traditions. Most people visit on a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.

The trips were fantastic. Once we were out of the city, there was more greenery and less traffic. There were acres of rice fields with lots of people with Vietnamese hats. I really loved it.

Constructed between 1933 and 1955, the Great Temple of Cao Dai closely resembles a Christian cathedral in its architecture – two square towers, a long central nave with upper gallery, and side aisles. The altar, an apse and ambulatory are at the opposite end from the entrance, just as in  a typical church.Cao Dai temple (1)Cao Dai temple (2)

The exterior and interior of the Cao Dai Temple are both extravagantly decorated, incorporating symbols, abstract designs and images of saints. The high ceiling is painted sky-blue with fluffy clouds and the floor tiles have busy patterns. The dragon-encrusted columns that run the length of the nave number 28, representing the 28 manifestations of the Buddha. Seven-headed cobras represent the seven human emotions.

One of the most memorable sights at the Cao Dai temple is the sea of worshippers who dress in flowing robes and assemble in orderly rows during a ceremony. Men sit on the right and women on the left.

Shopping

As usual my holiday would not be complete without shopping and I was so glad that we had a good one in Vietnam. We went to the Ben Thanh Market as well as shopping malls.

I was glad that Vietnam is not as commercialised as Thailand and it was easier to shop.

I went to Zara and Mango stores where things were cheaper than Australia and bought heaps of dresses. Also at the market we bought some souvenirs.

I would have done more shopping but couldn’t as we had already brought lots of stuff from Nepal.

Photo-shoot

We also did post wedding photo-shoot there and we loved the end result. Here are some shots from the shoot.

But the best part of the trip was the massage. It was very affordable and it was so good. We went for a massage every day. It cost us around AUD$15 for a whole body massage with aromatic oil and hot stones for over an hour.

The next best thing was that we felt like millionaires anywhere we went. We booked a private tour so we had the diver and the guide to ourselves all the time. The car they got for us had leather interior with air con. AUD $200 is equivalent to a million Vietnamese Dong so you are always paying in hundred thousands or millions.

I found the people friendly and the staff of the hotel very helpful. Like most of the Asian countries I have visited, they always had a smile on their face.

Till then, take care.

Our Story : Good bye and see you again – Part 26

This is a continuation of my previous posts. Please read the previous posts here.

As usual, the amazing trip to Bangalore was coming to an end and it is always hard to say goodbye. This time I knew I would see him in a months’ time but it still felt too long.

The day before the flight, he took me for a nice quiet dinner and we talked about our future in Australia. It was an honest conversation where both of us shared our plans, hopes and happiness. I wished the evening would never end but we had to sleep and pack my bags for the next day. When we were got back to our serviced apartment, AS went to take a shower and I was to pack. Instead of packing, I was in panic mode as I seemed to have too many stuff to pack. I was taking AS’s stuff as well as my shopping so there did not seem to be enough space in my suitcase. AS calmed me down and helped me pack and it was done in no time. After packing, it was time for bed.

The next morning the sun rose as any normal day but both of us were a bit emotional when we were having breakfast. We both knew our future ahead but at the same time we needed to say goodbye, hopefully for the last time until we were together for out happily ever after.

After breakfast, we called the same driver and made sure he would come and picks us up in time. Then we had a few hours to kill so we went for a walk to the nearby market. AS decided it was best I had a light snack before I left so he took me to a snack place where I had samosa and rasabri.

The ride to the airport was smooth. After I checked in the baggage, we had a few hours together before I had to go inside to clear immigration and board my flight to Sydney. It was a very sad few hours because both of us were going to part again. We just sat in front of each other and stared without talking for a while. I wanted to say a million things but I had no words and then we heard the announcement to board the flight.

It was an emotional goodbye for a few weeks and after hugging him for the last time I kept walking towards immigration. I didn’t want to turn around because I didn’t want him to see tears in my eyes.

The immigration process was quick and I went straight through the boarding gates to the waiting plane. I am not sure what I did but I was still alive when the plane landed in Sydney.

Human nature is very strange because you feel so much joy when you know you are going to meet someone and suddenly you can be so down when you are back alone.

For us it was not too bad and I know it in my head but my heart was refusing to cooperate.

After coming back to work, I made a countdown card and tore them one day at a time. I got really excited when it was down to single digits. By then AS was back in Nepal and was enjoying his days with his family.

We still talked every day but we didn’t have lot of time to communicate as he was busy saying goodbye to his family and friends in Nepal. And finally it was the day before AS was landing in Sydney.

I was super excited and everyone at my work knew that he was coming. I even bought a nice tiramisu cake for everyone at work to share my happiness and wrote the following email to AS.

Hey baby

How r u doing?

I am so so happy 🙂 🙂 🙂

I got a cake for my colleagues at work to celebrate your coming.

Sorry u couldn’t have a piece but I’ve sent you the pic

Love u love u love

Your,

M

I took the next day off as I was going to pick him up and spent the rest of the day home with him. It was one of the most important days in my life and I couldn’t really go to sleep that night. All I could imagine was our future together and couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

Next post will be about AS in Australia so don’t forget to come back.

Till then take care,

25 ways you can save money

A while ago, I wrote a post, Not Spending A Cent For A Day, because I believe in saving. Of course, everyone wants to earn more money and it might not always be possible to get more. However, it is possible to have more on your account by saving more. Here are some more simple steps I am taking to get more value out of my money. Hope it will be helpful for you guys too.

  1. Switch off light and power point whenever not required.
  2. Use energy saving blues (CFL or LED) and water efficient appliances to save money on electricity. They may be a bit expensive to buy but will save money over the long run.
  3. Choose a credit card with a low interest rate, especially if you are paying interest. Over years, you will save heaps of money on interest.
  4. If you have many credit cards, consolidate and you will save in annual fees and other administrative fees.
  5. Buy a car at the end of the financial and calendar years and do not forget to ask for discounts.
  6. Make a list of what you want to buy before going grocery shopping and stick to only those items stop impulse buying.
  7. Try the 30 days list idea and stick to it. It will save you heaps of money.
  8. Double the quantity of recipe when cooking which saves you time and money. I cook for lunch and dinner.
  9. Reuse the 3D glasses in cinema. It costs $1 every time you buy them.
  10. Always use discount pharmacy and generic medicine. They are always cheaper and have the same active ingredient.
  11. If you are thinking about a holiday, try to go away outside the school holidays if possible. You will get cheaper deals on flights and accommodations.
  12. If you are flying, try to fly midweek as Fridays and weekends are more expensive. In addition, mornings and evening flights are expensive than afternoon flights.
  13. Premier cuts of meats are very expensive like a kilo of lamb cutlets are $40/kg while if you buy secondary cuts; they are cheaper and taste the same.
  14. Always buy seasonal fruits and vegetables, as they are cheaper and tastier.
  15. When getting insurance, shop round and if you see the cheaper options, tell your insurance company. As the market is so competitive, there is a higher change that they will match the price otherwise you can always switch to the cheaper ones. Do make sure that you are getting the same level of coverage though; or you may end up paying more money later.
  16. Always open an offset account for your home loan and it will save you lots of money on interest saved over the lifetime of the loan.
  17. If you use certain brands/ shop more, subscribe to their newsletter and keep an eye on the specials. I have saved heaps buying things on discount.
  18. If you are going to dine in expensive restaurants for special occasions, check their website for early menus or fixed menu rather than á la carte. They are cheaper and you can enjoy the same food and quality.
  19. If you use your mobile a lot, look for plan options like cheaper calls or data only plans depending on what you use a lot and it will make a difference on your monthly bills. Avoid plans if possible and stick with prepaid, as you will have control on how much you are spending.
  20. Use cold water for the washing machine and it helps your clothes last longer and also save money on electricity.
  21. If you live in a country where tap water is good for drinking, stop paying for expensive-bottled water.
  22. If you have cable, check how often you watch it. As all of us are so busy, it might be worth buying the movies/ series online rather than subscription for the cable.
  23. Exercise is very important but you don’t have to pay for a gym subscription instead run in the park, practice yoga in front of the TV or pay as you go for swimming.
  24. Skip the delivery and pick up your meals. For us we save $8 every time we order pizza if we choose to pick up rather than get it delivered.
  25. If you have a big family, shop in bulk and save.

I am sure some of you already do most of these but of course you could always do more. If you google, you will find lots more tips and tricks online to help you save. My logica is if I can’t make more money, I will cut my spending and as a result the savings in my bank will increase. Be money wise and good luck.

Friday afternoon already so looking forward to the weekend.Have a great weekend and Take care,

Australia won the World Cup and the weekend update

I know FIFA World Cups is still underway (I am not crazy :P) and I know that Australia lost its first match against Chile but that is not what I am talking about here.

Australia is the world champions once again, defending their Hockey World Cup title with a 6-1 demolition of the Netherlands. 😀 😀 😀

Australian hockey team also known as the Kookaburras played the most dominant performance of the tournament and gave Australians a reason to celebrate :).

Now back to the soccer world cup, I enjoyed heaps of soccer last weekend. It was great to be home and watch the games. Saturday started early for us as there were a few games on but the very important one at 8am was Chile vs Australia.

It was so disappointing to watch 2 goals from Chile in the first 15 minutes. Seriously, every goal was so painful but Australia did still really push them hard. Then the magic happened, Tim Cahill’s goal with a brilliant header gave some hope back to the Aussies.

There were a few opportunities for Australia in the second half like Cahill (twice) and Mathew Leckie, both headed over during the second half, while Mark Bresciano struck a sweet far-post half-volley that was saved by Claudio Bravo.

Australia went down to Chile 3-1 and I am sad because Australia played really well. We will take on the Netherlands next on Thursday morning. I know Netherlands are good after watching their game with Spain but there is still some hope.

After the game on Saturday, I made a big breakfast with bacon, hash browns, beans, mushroom, eggs, bread and tea. It was more like a brunch than a breakfast and it kept us full for a long time.

big breakfast

The plan for the rest of the afternoon was to clean the house but our friends called to check if we were interested to go to eat Newari food for lunch. We couldn’t resist so we went to Bhancha to enjoy lunch with them. We ordered Fokso fry, Nhyapu (brain fry), jhol momo, choila and chatamari. The food was yummy and I had fun with their daughter.

cholia Fokso fry jhol momo

After a very satisfying lunch, we went to the beach again. We wanted to give our failed walk from last weekend another try and this time there was no rain.

me

It took us over 90 minutes (over 10,000 steps) to do that walk but it was one of the best things we did for the weekend. The sunset was just beautiful and AS and I talked the whole time.

sunset

As the lunch was so filling, AS had salad for dinner and I had some fruits and that was the end of Saturday.

Sunday was planned as a lazy Sunday so we had late breakfast and caught up on some TV shows. I have to admit I wasted many hours watching mindless things on YouTube instead of cleaning the house. So it was already 2pm when I went to the kitchen to make lunch for the day and for the following day. I made an easy chicken couscous, which turned out nice.

couscous (8)

After that we Skyped with our parents; it is always nice to catch up with them. By the time we were done with both the family, it was almost the end of the weekend.

Of course, we watched more soccer this morning. Go Argentina 🙂

How was your weekend? Hope you had heaps of fun too.

Take care,

FIFA World Cup fever

Unless you are hiding far far away from civilization I am sure you know that FIFA World Cup Football is here and we are so excited. 😀 😀 😀

Here is the official song for the cup.

Today is the first day of the game and the opening ceremony was held in the 62,600-capacity stadium Arena Corinthians in Sao Paulo before guests which included Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and embattled FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

The pre-match extravaganza starred pop superstar Jennifer Lopez, who performed the tournament’s official song, We Are One, with Brazilian songstress Claudia Leitte and rapper Pitbull.

Here are some colourful photos from the ceremony

This morning we woke up to watch the game but not at 4am. We missed most of the opening ceremony but I got to watch 70% of the game.

The first half we watched at home, getting dressed and having breakfast. At half time, we ran to the car but it took me more than 30 minutes to get to work. Therefore, I missed the Brazil’s second goal but was glad to watch rest of the game. The last few minutes were so exciting and the environment in the stadium was amazing. One of the items on my bucket list is to definitely watch a world cup live in the stadium.

Unfortunately being so far from Brazil, the games will air here very early, 4am and 7am so I am not sure how many games we are gonna watch. But it still will be a great month full of excitement and adrenaline rush. I am supporting Australia, Argentina and Brazil for this Cup.

Hope all of you are enjoying the game. My Facebook is flooded with posts about the world cup. I found this status and found it funny so sharing with you all. Glad we both are into the game so AS doesn’t have to put this on his status 🙂

Dear Sweetheart,

The FIFA World Cup is close by, so let me give you a few rules that will help both of us during the months of June and July.

  1. The TV remote control belongs to me for the whole month, no Magic Movie or Soap Opera this time around.
  2. Tell all your friends not to give birth or wed on any of the days of the world cup because we won’t attend.
  3. You must support the teams that I support or you use a sleeping pill while the match lasted.
  4. No talking during the game, wait for half time or end of the match.
  5. Repeats and highlights are as good as the main match, so I’m gona watch them too.
  6. We can watch movies/home videos provided actors/actresses are wearing football jersey and they are in Brazil.
  7. You don’t just pass in front of the TV if am watching any match, you better freeze where you are or crawl on the floor, I know you are beautiful, there is no need for beauty parade @ this crucial period, wait till July 14 please
  8. Make sure you don’t ask annoying questions such as “is this Arsenal vs England?”. Since it is not “Who wants to be a millionaire” I won’t bother to answer.
  9. No funny faces to my friends when they come to watch a match with me.
  10. Food must be ready 20 minutes before every crucial match particularly that of the Super Eagles.
  11. Smile every time EXCEPT when my team is losing OR ELSE!!!

May God help us.

If you are not into soccer but your partner is, please let them slack off for the next four weeks. He/She will love you for that forever 🙂

Please let me know which team you are supporting and may the best team win.

P.S: Today is Friday the 13th so please watch out everyone. 🙂
