Best Birthday – EVER!

I think everyone in this world like to be spoiled, be it men or women, and I am not any different. We planned not to have a big party for my birthday this year like every year. There is so much happening around us that I wanted to have a quiet one this year.

So, the original plan was to go to work on the day but meet after work to go and have dinner. But as everything in life, things didn’t go according to plan.

On the 28 Oct morning, when I woke up suddenly I didn’t feel like working so AS insisted that we take a day off so we have a whole day to celebrate my birthday. For a change, it was a nice idea to just relax and unlike every year I didn’t have to worry about the party and plan and cook food.

I was spoiled with amazing breakfast by my darling husband. It was a simple breakfast of toast, eggs, mushroom, bacon and tea. Just loved my lazy morning. Then we decided we have whole day and ended up watching my favourite series. By the time we were done, it was time to go for lunch. We went out had a quick lunch so we could watch a movie.

AS let me choose the movie and I chose Gravity. I was looking forward to watching it. I like the concept of the movie but I was a bit disappointed. Nothing as expected but 3D made a big difference. The rating for the movie was really good but I won’t call it a 4 star movie though.

Do share your thoughts about the movie.

Anyway, after movie we had dinner reservation so I was excited to have amazing dinner with my husband.

We went to a great Greek place where they served amazing food. The shared Greek entrée platter featuring Greek salad, dips, country-style bread, stuffed vine leaves, lima beans, haloumi cheese, savoury cheese pie, spinach and cheese pastries, fresh barbecued octopus, calamari and white bait fish was mouth-watering.

It was so much that I thought we didn’t need the main but still we ordered shared meat and seafood platter featuring lamb and chicken souvlaki, lamb chops and pork ribs served on a bed of traditional chips and Greek salad.

The food was accompanied by wine for AS and juice for me. I decided we didn’t need dessert as there was no room for more food in my tummy.

So we drove home happy and content. When we got home, I was surprised by AS with lovely roses, a birthday card and a yummy cake. It was so nice of him to be so thoughtful.

We cut the cake, just the two of us and celebrated my birthday. I loved everything about the day but the biggest surprise of the day was my birthday gift.

Yap, I was a surprised as we had been thinking about our Christmas/New Year holiday but hadn’t decided on anything and this makes it all so perfect. He bought a cruise holiday for us.

At the end of the year, we are going to New Caledonia from Sydney in a Carnival Sprite cruise and we will be stopping at Noumea, Lifou Isle and Isle Of Pines.

For those of you who don’t know, New Caledonia is a special collectivity of France located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 1,210 kilometres (750 mi) east of Australia.

The culture in the five islands that make up New Caledonia has heavy French roots and also unique Melanesian elements, while their southerly location make them a bit cooler than other South Pacific holiday destinations. The New Caledonia Barrier Reef (the second largest coral reef in the world after Australia’s), the island of Grande Terre, the sophisticated beach capital of Noumea, the Loyalty Islands, and the stunning Isle of Pines is considered  as one of the best places to travel.

This is going to be our first cruise holiday so I am looking forward to this tropical holiday and this will cross two items from my bucket list, cursing and New Caledonia, how awesome is that. Of course I will keep you updated about the trip when it happens in December.

Now I am 100% sure that my husband knows me so well  🙂

Instead of just being a birthday, this year also I am celebrating a birth week. I had a nice birthday lunch at work on Wednesday and they bought me Halloween themed cupcakes. They were so pretty and yummy as well.

Then the following day I went to lunch with another of my friends .Tonight my brother and his family are coming for dinner to celebrate my birthday as well so basically I am eating lots of food in the name of celebration. Scared to jump on the scale now  🙂

Another year older

I can’t believe I am another year older, it looks like time flies since I seem to remember talking about my pool party only a few months ago, or was that a year ago??

Birthday (35)

God I am loosing my memory already, I must indeed be old now 😉 :wizard::wizard: :wizard:

And it’s weird, the older I get, the younger I seem to feel. As my body ages, my mind and my spirit are pulling a Benjamin Button. Is it normal? :headbang::nutcase::woo:

Even after so many years, I am excited about my birthday like little kids and getting a cake, wishes and gifts makes me feel out of this world. I find myself feeling much younger than I am.  I suppose we all feel that way.  All I know, right now, today, is that I am happy.

Ten years ago, I thought I would have done and accomplished so much in life by this age but  I don’t have it together today. I thought that I would. But I don’t. In fact, the more I learn about myself and life, I believe that life is all about constant learning and the more that we learn, the more we realize we don’t know very much.

Birthday (4)

Looking back at my life, I am happy with it and hope to live the rest of my life surrounded by loved ones. So to celebrate life, I want to fill each day with something purposeful.  I’m so very fortunate to live where I want, with whom I want  and do what I want.

Halloween Birthday (37)

This year I decided that I am not going to have a big party like the last few years. All I want to do is to spend some quality time with my husband. We have plans to go for dinner tonight; will let you know details 🙂

It’s been a happy day so far with lots of texts, phone calls, Facebook posts from family and dear friends, wishing me a happy birthday. Hopefully rest of the day will follow suit.

If you are celebrating your birthday today, Happy Birthday fellow Scorpions 🙂

Monochrome Trend

Isn’t it so awesome to finally welcome spring after what seems like a very long winter? Off with our winter woollies and on with our floral, monochrome, bold colours and pastel outfits. With ideal temperatures for the next few months, let’s celebrate the warm weather with something fun and uplifting.

Sometimes things are simple and are black and white. If you are not big on colours, you can get inspired to think in black and white with monochrome outfits and accessories this spring. This fashion trend is one of the easiest ways to update your wardrobe for spring.

Catwalk shows from Marc Jacobs to Chanel showcased their black and white designs and the looks have quickly translated to our streets. Wearing just black and white is a great way to add interest to an outfit; it’s eye-catching and can work wonders on every body shape using different proportions.

 Tips on wearing monochrome

  • To brighten up a black and white look, simply add a pair of neon heels, colourful necklace or a bright, oversized clutch.
  • Curved contrasting panels on dresses accentuate or create an hourglass shape.
  • Draw attention to your top half by pairing a geometric patterned jacket with black pants.
  • Vertical panels make you look taller and slimmer.
  • To take your black and white look to an evening event, jazz it up with a red or pink lips to contrast with the simplicity of the outfit.
  • Experimenting with different shades and it will give your outfit variety .

Living in the west with values of the east

This article was published in DREAMS online magazine on 3rd October 2013.

dreams

When I was living in Nepal, I used to be annoyed and irritated by Nepali culture, tradition and values from time to time. Sometimes, I wished that I could run away from all that and live my life the way I wanted. And my wish was fulfilled when I left Nepal to come to Australia.

Having lived outside the country for more than decade now, I know how wrong my thoughts were. These days, I miss our culture, tradition, rituals and values that I used to ignore before. Not only do I miss it, I actually want to be a part of it and hope to pass it on to my kids and grand-kids one day, like my mother and grandmother did.

The festive season of Dashain and Tihar is here, and it is one of my favourite times of the year. This festive time has helped me connect with Nepal, Nepali culture and tradition. Before, I used to wish things could be as good in Australia as in Nepal, but that was just wishful thinking. So instead of being sad and depressed, this time I decided that we would celebrate the festivals with whatever we could.

With the motto, “If the mountain will not come to M, then M must go to the mountain”, we bring Nepali style Dashain and Tihar to Sydney. For the last few years, I have been having a lot of fun in Nepali festivals here.

For Dashain, I plant Jamara during Ghatasthapana, and it is ready for Tika day. During Asthami, Nawami and Dashami, we plan a Newari bhoj to mark the days.

Last year we had Kuchi Bhwey, a Newari bhoj consisting of Baji/Chiura(beaten/flattened rice), Chicken curry, Spinach, Methi kerau (fenugreek and peas), Thulo kerau (big peas), Golbheda achar (tomato pickle), Butan(meat fry), Aloo tama(potatoes with bamboo shoots), and Methi(fenugreek) salad on Asthami.

On Nawami, we followed the tradition and performed a worship of our car. Later we had Samay Baji, a Newari dish consisting of Baji/Chiura(beaten/flattened rice) , Haku Mushya (black soyabean), Chhwela (smoked meat), Puka-la (spicy roasted meat), Aalu achar (cold potato salad ), Bhuti (boiled beans with spices), Khyen (boiled egg), Panchkwa (bamboo shoot, potato, beans mixed curry), Wo or Bara (shallow fried pancakes made of black lentil), Lava-palu (ginger and garlic), Achar (pickle), Wauncha (green vegetables) and Aayla (Newari liquor).

On Vijaya Dashmi, we normally take a day off from work so we can have fun with our loved ones. It is always fun to be blessed by elders with red Tika and Jamara. Following Tika, there are a few days where we get invited for tika, and this normally concludes the celebration of Dashain.

After a few weeks, we celebrate Tihar in full swing as well. I know people overseas normally celebrate only Bhai Tika but I didn’t want to miss out on the other days. So I perform Kag Tihar, Kukkur Tihar, Laxmi Puja and Mha Puja as well.

I haven’t seen many crows around in Sydney, so I decided to print a photo of a crow to perform my puja with. I know it sounds a bit silly, but it helps me to celebrate the festival. I did the same during Kukur Puja, printed the photo of a dog that my parents have in Nepal. If you ever feel like celebrating Tihar in full swing, you may want to follow my ideas.

I love Laxmi Puja as it make me feel happy and there is so much to do. We start the evening by lighting fairy lights and candles. Then I perform Laxmi Puja to the best to my knowledge. I normally print out the Mandap and Laxmi’s footsteps so I can perform the puja. Living overseas, we have to make do with whatever we can rather than missing out in the belief that we can’t do it.

Following Laxmi Puja, we performed Mha Puja with my brother, cousins, and friends. Mha Puja is such a great way to come together and have fun in our Newar culture. For this puja too we used printed mandaps, which made it easy for us to set up the puja. Like in Nepal, we have Shagun (a traditional plate typically consisting of a boiled egg, smoked fish, a “bara”, haku chhoila”  and “aila”, which ends with “dhau”) and bless our body for good health.

And finally, there is the Bhai Tika, which is always a big deal for me. I have two brothers on whom I perform the Puja, and I wanted to make sure it is a great celebration. I and my cousin even learned how to make Sel Roti, so our celebration is a lot like Nepal’s. I prepare for Bhai Tika weeks in advance, making masala (pack of dry fruits & nuts) and buying fruits, snacks and clothes. I prepare Shagun on the day and bake cakes for puja as well. I am always happy to see my brothers enjoying the day with me, and blessing me with happiness and gifts.

Not only celebrating Dashain and Tihar, but we try to do whatever we can to be in touch with Nepalese tradition and culture. Recently, my nephew had his 6th birthday, and it was celebrated with yomari (a newari delicacy made of external covering of rice-flour and an inner content of treacle) mala like in Nepal. One of my nephews was born here in Australia, so we did his chatti and nwaran (naming ceremony) according to Hindu rituals. We celebrate Teej every year wearing red and eating yummy Nepalese cuisine. And whenever possible, we go to Nepal to celebrate milestones like marriage and pasni. We had a traditional Newari wedding which went for over a week, and my nephew had his pasni in Nepal with our relatives and friends.

Even though I don’t have kids of my own right now, I know that they are affected by many thing in life, but their strongest main values are learned from their parents, society and surrounding environment. I know that even in Nepal, with globalisation we are losing some of our traditional values fast, while we adopt easily imitable aspects of western culture. Nepal has a unique blend of culture and customs, and people travel millions of miles to learn and observe these in Nepal. It will be a shame for our kids not to know their own customs, traditions, and rituals.

I hope my effort in bringing our eastern culture to the west will help my kids and their kids to learn more about Nepal, Nepali culture, traditions, rituals and values, so that they know their root and can be proud of it. I have been away from Nepal for a long time, but I still cherish the values that I have learned, and I hope one day, our next generation will do the same.

Happy Dashain and Tihar to all readers. No matter where you are, enjoy it in full swing!!!!
