My birthday weekend with Halloween Themed birthday bash

I guess it is correct when they say age is just a number. I am getting older but I don’t feel any different than what I felt 5 years ago. As the birthday passes every year, I have not started to feel older yet.

Any way, 28 October, Saturday was my birthday and I had 3 days of celebration, thanks to my friends and family.

On Friday, we had organized a girls’ night out with a few of my friends. It was so much fun with 11 girls going out for dinner, drinks and dance. As our better half looked after our kids at home, we met up in the city and went to Pancake on the Rocks for dinner.

The dinner went well with lots of fun and laughter. The food was good and the company was the best and it was a great start to the night.

There was one moment when two kids came out from the bathroom with their mum and all the mums in our group were looking at them and thinking about their own kids. I guess we can never stop being a mum in our hearts no matter where we are.

After dinner, we went to Marquee night club for their Zoo night. It was advertised as “Sydney just got wilder… with glamorous dancers, tons of confetti, blasts of CO2, suspended jungle vines and golden animals, Marquee Zoo has arrived. The new face of Friday nights at Marquee, Zoo features pumping party music you can get down and dirty to, coupled with a crazy party atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the city.”

We were all excited for the night and were at the venue by 10pm. When we arrived, there were not many people at the club so we started the night with a few shots of tequila.

As the night went on, more people started to arrive and it started to be more fun. Initially, I felt like maybe I was too old to be clubbing but as the night went on and we started dancing, we had so much fun that everything seemed perfect.

The girls even sang “Happy Birthday” for me at midnight which was just sweet.

We danced till 2pm and then decided to go home. We caught Uber home and I was home by 2:40am. I think it has been more than 5 years since I have had this big a night out.

When I was home, I was expecting Chhori and AS to be in bed but to my surprise, AS was still awake and working on the decoration for our party on Saturday night. The feature wall was coming along nicely and I was so impressed. I am sure his engineering skills was put to good use 🙂

I stayed awake for another hour and we went to bed and it was almost 4am.

At 6:30, I could hear Chhori wake up and go to the lounge room. I tried to ignore her for a while and get back to sleep but couldn’t for long so I went out too. She was so excited to see the wall decoration. She said “Happy Birthday Mama.” She has been saying that for a week now every day.

She has been saying to everyone who listens to her, “We are having a Halloween party. I am a witch and mama is a witch and papa is a skeleton.” In a sweet little voice. It was so good to see her so excited.

I let AS sleep for a while and after breakfast, started preparing for the party. It was nice to receive calls, messages and posts from family and friends wishing me on my birthday.

AS woke up and continued with the decoration for a while as I prepared special food like witches fingers and spider eggs. The biggest task was to pull off this special Brain cake.

While looking for Halloween cake ideas, AS came up with this idea for a Brain cake, which took some convincing on his part. I was not too sure at first but I am just glad we did it. We were super excited when the cake came to life at the end. It was hard work on both our sides but it was worth it. I will post a step by step on how we did it on my next post.

Then AS made the drink and by the time everything was ready the guests started to arrive.

We got dressed , Me and Chhori as witches and AS as skeleton.

Our guests were all dressed in different outfit like nuns, pirates, skeletons, devils, vampires and so on and our apartment was looked like one cool place.

Everyone was impressed by the decorations and the cake and everything else so it was really great. I am so glad that all the effort AS made with the decoration was so great that whole night everyone was talking about it.

After the entrée, we had a few games planned for the children and adults and it went well. Everyone enjoyed it and had fun and took heaps of photos.

Then it was dinner time and the special moment where I cut the cake. I was expecting people to gross out over the cake but everyone was excited, especially the kids with the cake.

We had a great party and it was definitely a success looking at everyone’s reaction.

That night when we went to bed, we thought we have to do this all over again the next day. As we had different groups of people, we thought it was a good idea to invite people in different groups which meant on Sunday we started the same routine with all the food.

Decorations were already done and making the cake was easier this time around.

All the guests were dressed up this time as well and we had fun. By the time, the last guest left on Sunday, we were so tired that we went to bed straight away.

Having late night for 3 days in a row was not a great idea but I had an awesome weekend for my birthday. I feel so blessed to have AS in my life who made sure I had a great time and all my friends and family who were there for me.

Take care,

Bokshi’s bites

Bokshi means witch or a woman who practices black magic.

I have never believed in those stuffs but it is funny how things come up.

I have been sick the last few days and for the last few weeks, I am having nightmares. I really can’t remember them much but I know they were bad dreams as I remember running or falling and waking up in the middle of the night, panicked. I tried everything to get a better sleep but with no success.

I think I am having bad dream because I am stressed out. So much is happening around me that some nights, I am half sleep and I feel that someone is talking to me. Then the other day I saw this bruise on my thigh. It was oval shaped and dark blue in colour. I couldn’t remember bumping into anything but I have a bruise and it hurts.

bokshi biteSo, when I showed that to AS, he said it looks like something they call Bokshi’s bite in Nepal.

In Nepal, people believe that a bokshi sucks blood of other women to harm them. People still hold to the myth that such blue patches are marks after the bokshi has bitten and sucked their blood. Accordingly, the patches seem like a bite, kind of like a hikey. The mark of upper and lower teeth remains for a couple of days and it hurts as well.

I am sure it is nothing like that but hearing those things, we are always reminded of myths like that. I wonder how these things come to exist but doing further research, this is what I found.

According to a doctor, blue patches are frequent amongst women who are anemic. Accordingly, such patches develop often if there is any kind of deficiency in blood components or the person’s blood itself – for instance, in anemia. Generally, women in their fertility period get the patches. Such condition is known as bruises, bluish discoloration of skin, or ecchymosis.

A woman’s body is in need of blood as there is a heavy loss of it during menstruation. Thus, the blood capillaries burst in specific areas, causing bleeding under the skin. Besides, such bluish bruises also occur in women who have had their menopause, or are in that phase, as changes occur in the blood-clotting factor, which also affects the colouring factor of blood. And similar is the case in girls who have just reached their puberty. In the meantime, if there is deficiency of Vitamin C, then such bruises occur frequently.

As an early treatment, the doctor suggests taking iron capsules since it boosts hemoglobin. However, if this does not help, it is wise to have a blood test.

Furthermore, the doctor explains, the second layer of body skin has the most blood veins among the three layers. So if there is any kind of pressure on the capillaries, then bleeding can occur in the second layer of skin. But there can be no superficial bleeding. Blue patches appear more often if it is aplastic anemia. Usually, in this type of anemia, there is superficial bleeding and a continuous one, such as from the ears and nose.

Bluish discoloration of the skin can be related to many diseases. For instance, liver disease, scurvy, abnormal functioning of the kidneys, eye diseases, hormonal disorder, problems in circulatory functions, and lack of blood platelet, which helps in blood-clotting.

Unlike women, men don’t lose blood from their bodies so such patches are rare in them. If it appears then it’s serious. The patches might develop on men with liver cirrhosis or hormonal disorder. Men with hemophilia, a genetic disorder, also get such patches.

Explaining the shape of the patch which appears like a bite mark, the doctor says, It’s hypnotism. Because everyone has been repeating the same thing, we also feel that it’s a tooth mark. But actually, it’s the path of blood vessels, which can vary.

So here is the explanation for Bokshi’s bite on my leg. I don’t believe in black magic and divine power. If a person possesses divine power then why don’t they use it to make their life better than selling it to other for money? I really think there are so many things we can’t explain in this universe and that is why we give them different names.

I believe that everyone has a darker side, some darker than others. Therefore, when someone calls a person bokshi (witch), it is just a stage when that person has a personality disorder or a mental illness. So we need to help these people get proper medical treatment to make them better.

Do you believe in black magic? If you have any interesting story please share.

My Halloween Theme Birthday Party

I have to admit marriage has more perks than problems. It gave me two brains to think with and four hands to work with, when I needed it.

As I had mentioned on my previous post (Need some help with Halloween food!), we were planning a Halloween themed birthday party for me. It was last Saturday and I am so glad that I had AS with me to help with the cooking and the decoration.

I was joking with AS that he was taken over by some Halloween ghost because for weeks leading to the party, all he talked about was how he wanted to decorate the apartment. He had this vision and I helped him and the end result was awesome!

Everyone was so impressed with what he had done with the decoration. We had our window in the living room decorated with Halloween silhouettes. He spent lots of time making this. We also had a big cloth painting of the Grim Reaper with red eyes and a scary voice.

The best decoration was in the bathroom, behind the door. He used a mask like in Scream with my long leather jacket and black plants. Then he had this Halloween plastic knife which looked like it had blood coming out of it, and he attached it to the hand of this spooky figure. Many of my friends got a fright when they went to the loo. 😀

I was really happy with my friends and family when they too got into the Halloween spirit (pun intended) and dressed up for my birthday party. They came as the devil, a vampire, a witch and many more scary and ghostly apparitions for which I don’t even have names 🙂 . A picture speaks a thousand words, they say, so I will let you decide what they were for yourself

Even the cake was spooky with eyeballs, ghosts and pumpkins.

Overall I had the best birthday ever especially when AS surprised me with the wonderful ring that he got for me.
