In love with Prabal Gurung Spring 2014 New York Fashion Show

My favourite designer Prabal Gurung is out with his Spring 2014 New York Fashion Show collection. I am in love with his collection in pastel colours, abstract florals, sheer mesh panelling and couture flourishes. Staged in an industrial hall in the cavernous space of Moynihan station, the show started with models lining behind the clear curtain giving audience time to look at the amazing collection in detail.

The designer explains the idea behind his Plastic Cage-Like Runway Show. “Basically, it’s celebrating the preservation of an elegant woman, which has become a source of inspiration and intrigue for me for the longest time. The idea of preservation came from couture fabrics—to modernize it, to use plastic, to lacquer it,” Gurung told InStyle.com. “The whole thing started with Bert Stern’s picture of Marilyn Monroe‘s last sitting. She’s the idealized woman. There was something so beautiful and so melancholic about (the picture), and I wanted to create that.” And that he did, bringing femininity into a modern context through the clothes, jewelry and even shoes.

I am loving the shirtdresses, halter blouses, curve-hugging midi-skirts, sweetheart neckline wiggle dresses and tulip jackets.

Here are some of my favorites from the collection.

I also loved matte shades lips, perfect hair, colorblocked cat-eye sunglasses  but the highlight for me is definitely the amazing collection of pointed-toe slingbacks. I really want them now.

It was a celebration of women,” he said, backstage after the show. “I was thinking about preserving elegance, but making it modern and right for now – and with the right amount of danger . I wanted to abstract and modernize this idea of an idealized woman, For me, it’s someone who’s colorful, bold, and unafraid of her curves—really being feminine and appreciating that. Sensual, but with a hint of danger”

Here are some reviews for his collection.

Vouge magazine : “ Technically, too, this was Prabal Gurung’s best collection to date.

British Vouge :”I like the idea of femininity with bite,” he smiled. We do too.”

Women wear daily: “The evening dresses were the real highlight, with Gurung turning down the sporty effects to let the glamour glow. True to his word, he layered harnesses under the dresses and gowns, many done in thick, colourful satin wrapped around the body or corseted and spliced with mesh on tea-length dresses. A black silk duchesse dress, cut off the shoulder and embroidered with big crystal rosettes, was just about perfect.”

fashionista.com : “Prabal Gurung’s spring 2014 show was an experience–one that made use of all of our senses. It was risky collection, unlike anything we’ve seen thus far this week, as Gurung proved yet again why he’s one of New York’s biggest stars.”

Different looks of Prabal Gurung for Target collection

This article was published in +977 (a Nepalese Lifestyle Magazine in Australia) in June-July 2013 issue.

If you are following the fashion world, I am sure you are familiar with Prabal Gurung,  the Nepalese born American designer who has dressed famous ladies like Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge, Zoe Saldana, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence, Demi Moore, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried,  and Sarah Jessica Parker to name just  a few.

On February 2013, Prabal Gurung collaborated with Target and launched a collection based  on the theme “LOVE”. The collection was a big hit with some of the favourite pieces running out on  the first day. Unfortunately, Target Australia did not carry the collection, which means we were left out.

Luckily, we managed to purchase a few items from his collection from the USA and have styled our pieces in different looks.

Prabal Gurung For Target Cardigan in Meet the Parents Print

Boho chic: For this look, we paired the cardigan with a black maxi dress and belted it to cinch the waistline. For accessories, we just went with a pair of black sandals, silver necklace and a mini shoulder bag to keep things simple and casual. This look is very bohemian and adding the printed cardigan elevated a simple black maxi dress making it boho chic.

Casual edge: For this particular look, we tried to put together a causal and laid-back style with a bit of an edge.  We simply paired the cardigan with a very basic yellow tank top and black skinny jeans. To add some edge, we accessorised with a pair of studded ankle boots, cross earrings and a big crescent pendant. Again, adding this printed cardigan injects life to this otherwise very plain style.

Girlie girl: For the third look, we tried playing the colour pink and girlie silhouette. We basically put the cardigan buttoned up and tucked inside a flared black skirt. To emphasize the waistline, we used a skinny belt in neon pink which also adds a girlie touch. To make this look even more feminine, we went with a pair of pumps in bubble gum pink and a statement necklace with pink accents. It’s a very fun and girlie look.

Prabal Gurung For Target Dress in Meet the Parents Print

Colour Burst: For the first look, we used some key pieces from Prabal Gurung(PG) collection. We styled this PG black & white floral printed skater dress with PG heels in similar print and PG clutch in lolita print. This cute clutch injects some colour to this otherwise monochromatic outfit; we also added some fun statement necklaces in yellow and pink for that extra punch of colour.

Frosty: We tried adding some glamour to this dress with frosty silver pumps and clutch. For some drama, we added a chunky pearl necklace. This look is perfect for girl’s night out or that romantic dinner date with your partner.

Lady in Red: Adding some structured pieces like this red blazer and wedges gives this dress a very formal and sharp appeal. This outfit can be worn to work or anywhere where you want to polished and formally dressed.

Casual Chic: We did a fun experiment by turning this dress into a flared skirt. For this look, knitwear is worn over the dress making it appear as a skirt. We finished off the look by adding pair of black tights, ankles boots and a scarf in bright yellow colour. This look is very casual, comfortable and chic; great for walking around or running errands.

Prabal Gurung for Target: Ruffle Dress in Sulphur

I couldn’t wait till spring to wear my Prabal Gurung dresses so today I wore the Ruffle Dress in Sulphur to work. (It’s autumn here now so it would be a long wait till spring 🙂 )

I noticed that the dress is a bit brighter than I expected. As my skin is brown, it tends to make me look a shade darker.  I am very happy with the quality of the dress though. It is super lightweight and very fluid. For a target dress, it is just very good. The length of the dress is a bit longer than my normal dresses but that may be because I am not very tall. Absolutely no see through issues.

I wore the dress with a black blazer and was very happy to see it go so well.

I wore my black max shoes and big black ring.

I am sure I can wear this dress more this season with a black belt, black stocking and black boots.

Can’t wait to style my other Prabal Gurung collections.

Till next post, take care!

Over the moon to get the Prabal Gurung parcel

I have to start this blog first by thanking Tincup, Kalibird and my dearest friend SD. Because without them my dream of owning my own Prabal Gurung dress would have been just a dream.

Anyway, I am sure you know from my post here and here that Prabal Gurung collection for Target was out recently. And I am sure you know how disappointed I was when I realised that Target in Australia was not going to have his collection.

But thanks to dear friends, who I met via my blog, Tincup and Kalibird and my good friend SD, I now have 3 dresses, a shoe and a bag by Prabal Gurung 🙂

Let me give you the whole story from the start. When I realised that Target here were not getting these dresses, I thought it was still going to be ok. I will buy all the stuff I wanted online and then get it shipped here. Even though  I was not sure about the sizes I decided on size 4 and mentally prepared what I wanted and how much I was going to spend. So on the day these dresses came online, I went to target US site. But unfortunately, most of the dresses I wanted were not available online. Out of everything I wanted I would only be able to get a bag so I decided not to get anything at all. I was very disappointed, annoyed, sad, and so depressed that day that my husband was doing his best to console me. And to top it off, all my friends in the US were uploading their PG dresses on Facebook.

I didn’t want to bother anyone in the US at first as I knew it would be a hassle for them to go shopping for me. But I had no choice and so emailed my friend SD. She didn’t get back to me in a few hours so I didn’t know what to do. It was really nice of Tincup and Kalibaird to offer to help me after reading my blog. And I am really grateful that they trusted me and offered to buy me stuff even they have never met me and know me only through the blog.

As I didn’t see any other way to get those dresses, I emailed them back and asked them to check a few things for me. I was kind of sure it would be very hard to get them as I was reading online how most of the dresses were out of stock in the first few hours. But it must be my good luck that Kalibird was able to get me a dress and shoes that I wanted. Thanks a lot girl, you made my day.

In the meantime my friend SD called from US and I told her what I wanted. I also told her that I already got a dress and  shoes. So she went shopping for me and sent me a few photos of dresses and bags which were available in the Target store that she went to. I so wished I was there to be able to try those dresses but I had no choice but to hope for the best and asked here to pick the dresses in size 4. I asked her to pick up ruffle dress in lime (I really wanted this dress in red) and a clutch.

Prabal Gurung Dresses

All of them offered to look for more but I told them not to. I knew most of the items I wanted were gone anyway and it would be a waste of their time. And I ready had two dresses, shoes and a bag.

But SD being the great friend she is, kept looking and was able to get another dress, the one with Meet the Parents Print.

Kalibird shipped the stuff she bought to SD and SD shipped everything to me.

Finally all the stuffs are here and I am over the moon. I was so excited when I opened the parcel.

Prabal Gurung Dresses

I was like a child opening a birthday present. Loved all of them and feel blessed to have so many nice people round me who went to extra length to make my dream come true Thank you everyone. I love you all.

Varsha Thapa: First international fashion model from Nepal

It is always great to report success of people from Nepal. Today I am introducing Varsha Thapa, a beauty with long cascading dark hair, enviable skin and exotic features who became the first ever Nepali to walk the New York Fashion Week in 2011.

She’s been recognized as one of Nepal’s first supermodels and she is represented by Wilhelmina Model Agency. She is the first and only Nepali model to be represented by a major agency in America. She made her runway debut in Spring/Summer 2012 during New York Fashion Week walking in 10 shows including Prabal Gurung, Phillip Lim and Many Coon.

Varsha is a graduate of Hospitality Management but decided to become a model because of her passion for modelling. Since having arrived in New York, Varsha has been mentored by her scout, Roman Young. “He has helped me with everything from my walk to advising me on what to wear when I go for casting calls,” Varsha said.

Varsha has been adjusting really well in New York as, on a single day, Varsha had casting calls scheduled with 19 designers. Impressively, she made it to 18 of them. The gruelling nature of the industry is the norm, especially for Fashion Week. But Varsha has also been sent to casting calls at some of the industry’s biggest names like Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, an indication of where her agency thinks her potential lies and looks fit.

She has done shows like – Spring/Summer 2012 {3.1 Phillip Lim, Creatures of the Wind, L’Wren Scott, Mandy Coon, Patrik Ervell, Prabal Gurung, St. John, Suno, Suzanne Rae}, Autumn/Winter 2012 {Bibhu Mohapatra, Dennis Basso, Libertine, Miguel Adrover, Tracy Reese}.

She was also featured in Navayaata magazine in Nepal as well as Rouge Magazine in China.

Here is her interview with Women’s Wear Daily (WWD)

WWD: It’s getting late in Paris — are you heading to bed soon?

Varsha Thapa: I just got to another job now, for Moda Operandi. We’re shooting Christopher Kane, I think. This is my first time working with them. I came from a fitting at Vivienne Westwood. I tried on like eight outfits. The shoes were crazy. Vivienne alwaysFXFLd7IfrZi45yu.ZOi3sc6D2CbHo_hmried were in a heart shape, with block heels. They were kind of hard to walk in, and I had to walk maybe twelve times.

WWD: Before we talk about Paris, how was New York Fashion Week?

V.T.: Great. I did Kimberly Ovitz, which was really fun. I like her clothes a lot. It was really artistic. Generally, she does like black stuff, but this time she included colour. She had these leather pants that were really cool. They were like painted gold or something. They were amazing.

WWD: Did any other shows stand out?

V.T.: I did Bibhu Mohapatra, and I really like his clothes a lot. That show had crazy hair. First there were braids, then they had to back-comb everything. There were a lot of things going on. It was painful, but it was only for a little bit, so I was fine. There was a bun and on top of that, there was a lot of crimping. There were a lot of clips in my hair. It took a while to take them out. I slept on the pins and the next day, I was like, “What is this in my hair?”

WWD: What are your thoughts on Paris so far?

V.T.: The amazing thing about Paris is there are so many patisseries here. You don’t really have to think about what to get — there are so many amazing choices. In New York, you don’t have that. Either you go to Starbucks or some other chain. There is this place near my hotel, and I know it’s not the healthiest, but it’s so good. Every morning, I’m so tempted to go there and get a croissant. They have different types of croissants, a healthy kind and a regular. I get the healthy kind, but sometimes I sneak and get the regular.

WWD: Have you gotten to do any tourist-y activities?

V.T.: No, and this is my first time ever going to Paris. Thankfully, I’m here until March 20th. I’m going to go to the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Elysées. I want to explore Paris, which I haven’t been able to. Since the moment I got here, I started working.

WWD: Do you know what shows you’ll be doing?

V.T.: It’s all to be determined. You never know until you are confirmed. It’s very iffy. I’m not sure if I’m going to do anything, or if I’ll book a show after the fitting. But, the castings are still happening, the fittings are still happening and the options are still there.

WWD: Do you ever get disappointed when you don’t book a job?

V.T.: Yes. Just a few days ago, after a casting, I got sent directly to a fitting because the designers liked me a lot. I was there waiting for four hours, so I had to miss two really good castings. Then, after the fitting, I was cancelled from the show. That was a really big disappointment, but it’s all right. It happens every season to every girl.

Prabal Gurung for Target collection is not coming to Australia :(

I am sure everyone knows by now that how much I love Prabal Gurung and was over the moon when he announced Prabal Gurung for Target collection. I am sure you have read this and this posts about the collection.

I was literally counting down the days until Feb 10 2013. I made sure my day was free on that Sunday so I can be first on the line at Target when they open that morning. I was a bit worried that I won’t get what I want in my size.

Last weekend, I went to Target and asked about the details so I know what time I should be in store to buy my favourite pieces and I was surprised to know that they had no clue as to what I was talking about. So they asked me to call the head office and I did so today. I am shattered, devastated, sad, angry, annoyed to say the least when they informed me that AUSTRALIA IS NOT GETTING PRABAL GURUNG FOR TARGET COLLECTION.

I had been planning my purchases from day one of the announcement. When I had a birthday last year, I asked everyone to give me Target voucher so I can buy more items from the collection. Also I was telling my hubby that my Valentine’s gift will be from Prabal Gurung for Target collection as well.

I even dreamed of wearing the red ruffle dress with lace miniaudiere black shoe, short-sleeve dress in Calypso Coral/Atlantis with lace-up heels in Meet the Parents print and pleated skirt with lace in Sulfur Spring with lace-up pumps in Nolita print. Let me not even go on about bags and accessories.

Seriously this is the first time I have spent so much time looking at each item and accessories from the collection and making a list of what I want to buy. I even had a budget for it but in the end, all my dreams went up in smoke. Don’t know what to do now 😦 😦 :(. Very very very sad.

P. S.: I am thinking of online options now but I am so confused about the sizes. I really hope I will be able to buy them as they will be popular and I will have the disadvantage of being so far away.

I am size 6 or 8 in Australia so I think I will need US size 2 or 4 but I won’t be sure until I wear them. So I am thinking to order size 4 just in case size 2 doesn’t fit me. If anyone can help me with the sizes, it would be really appreciated.
