Discovering Newari cuisine

I am sure all of you know by now that I am bit of a foodie and I love to try new recipes and anything unusual. I have tried many different cuisines and even snails, frogs, stingrays, rabbits, kangaroos, and camel too. But I have to admit, my native cuisine, Newari, is always close to my heart. Even though I love momo and think that it is the best food in the world, Newari food like bara, yomari, chatamari are still my all-time favourites. I still remember my grandma and my mum making them for us when we were little.

I didn’t know how to make most of these Newari foods when I first came to Australia but I have learned how to make some of them now. And I am determined to learn more in the future so I can make them for my friends and family.

We had heard that a new restaurant called “Bhanchha” had opened in Sydney a while ago advertising themselves as “The Nepalese Newari taste”. As there are hardly any places else for us to go and try authentic Newari food, we were meaning to go there for a while.

Finally, we managed to go there with some of our friends last week. I was a bit surprised with the casual look of restaurant as I had fine dining in my mind. As we walked into the restaurant, the front area was empty and no one was there to greet us. We kept walking until we reached the inner half of the restaurant. There the waiter showed us to our table and handed us the menu. The menu was just a normal one so I got the idea that they want to be casual dining and not fine dining.

Looking at the menu, I was transported to Kathmandu straight away. They were serving Haku chhoyal (grilled spiced meat), fokso (goat lungs) fry , Jibrao (goat tounge) fry, Nhyapu (goat brain) fry, Bhutan ( intestine, giblets etc.) fry, Tahakhala ( special jellied meat), Sanya khuna (special jellied meat with fish) as well as bara, chatamari, aaloo tama. I stopped on the first page as there were so many things I wanted to try.

After thinking about it, we ended up ordering momo (of course), Fokso fry, Jibrao fry, Nhyapu, Sanya khuna and Samay Baji set.

All food came to our table in reasonable time and they looked very appetizing. All of us agreed that the food tasted very authentic and were delicious. We had one non-Nepali in our table and he loved all the food too.

I just love their Nhyapu out of everything and we ended up ordering one more serve of it. I was really impressed because they all were typical Newari food and it is definitely a privilege to get that so easily in Sydney.

One thing I didn’t like was Sanya khuna as it was not as set as it was supposed to be. It was a bit runny instead of jelly. But the taste was still good, may be they just needed to make sure they serve it straight from the freeze to the table.

In Samay Baji set, I was happy to taste chhoyala, aaloo tama, achar, bodi and bhatmas. All the food was definitely good and it was a perfect place if you are trying to introduce Newari cusine to someone new.

We also tried Ranjana ko Cola, special type of drink where coke is mixed with spices to enhance the flavour. I was not a fan of it in Nepal and I didn’t find it very special but my husband told me that it did taste like what he used to drink during our school years in Nepal.

If you are in Sydney, I recommend this place to try Newari cusine. The price of food is very reasonable as we ordered lots of food and end up paying only $20/person so it is definitely value for money. Just remember it is not fine dining when you go there so you don’t get disappointed by the look of the place and their service.

The only disappointment was I wish they looked after the toilet a bit more. The ladies toilet I went to had no lock and it was not too clean.  Food wise the restaurant is really good and the place can be better if they improve the ambiance and service.

We are already planning to again soon and this time we are taking more of our Non Nepali friends so they can enjoy typical Newari food.

P.S: We believe that when an animal is killed for consumption, no part of the animal should go to waste and Newar people have mastered how to make each part delicious over the years. I am sure anyone who has ever tried Newari cuisine will agree with me.

Best Birthday – EVER!

I think everyone in this world like to be spoiled, be it men or women, and I am not any different. We planned not to have a big party for my birthday this year like every year. There is so much happening around us that I wanted to have a quiet one this year.

So, the original plan was to go to work on the day but meet after work to go and have dinner. But as everything in life, things didn’t go according to plan.

On the 28 Oct morning, when I woke up suddenly I didn’t feel like working so AS insisted that we take a day off so we have a whole day to celebrate my birthday. For a change, it was a nice idea to just relax and unlike every year I didn’t have to worry about the party and plan and cook food.

I was spoiled with amazing breakfast by my darling husband. It was a simple breakfast of toast, eggs, mushroom, bacon and tea. Just loved my lazy morning. Then we decided we have whole day and ended up watching my favourite series. By the time we were done, it was time to go for lunch. We went out had a quick lunch so we could watch a movie.

a (9)a

AS let me choose the movie and I chose Gravity. I was looking forward to watching it. I like the concept of the movie but I was a bit disappointed. Nothing as expected but 3D made a big difference. The rating for the movie was really good but I won’t call it a 4 star movie though.

Do share your thoughts about the movie.

Anyway, after movie we had dinner reservation so I was excited to have amazing dinner with my husband.

We went to a great Greek place where they served amazing food. The shared Greek entrée platter featuring Greek salad, dips, country-style bread, stuffed vine leaves, lima beans, haloumi cheese, savoury cheese pie, spinach and cheese pastries, fresh barbecued octopus, calamari and white bait fish was mouth-watering.

It was so much that I thought we didn’t need the main but still we ordered shared meat and seafood platter featuring lamb and chicken souvlaki, lamb chops and pork ribs served on a bed of traditional chips and Greek salad.

The food was accompanied by wine for AS and juice for me. I decided we didn’t need dessert as there was no room for more food in my tummy.

So we drove home happy and content. When we got home, I was surprised by AS with lovely roses, a birthday card and a yummy cake. It was so nice of him to be so thoughtful.

We cut the cake, just the two of us and celebrated my birthday. I loved everything about the day but the biggest surprise of the day was my birthday gift.

At the end of the year, we are going to New Caledonia from Sydney in a Carnival Sprite cruise and we will be stopping at Noumea, Lifou Isle and Isle Of Pines.

For those of you who don’t know, New Caledonia is a special collectivity of France located in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 1,210 kilometres (750 mi) east of Australia.

The culture in the five islands that make up New Caledonia has heavy French roots and also unique Melanesian elements, while their southerly location make them a bit cooler than other South Pacific holiday destinations. The New Caledonia Barrier Reef (the second largest coral reef in the world after Australia’s), the island of Grande Terre, the sophisticated beach capital of Noumea, the Loyalty Islands, and the stunning Isle of Pines is considered  as one of the best places to travel.

This is going to be our first cruise holiday so I am looking forward to this tropical holiday and this will cross two items from my bucket list, cursing and New Caledonia, how awesome is that. Of course I will keep you updated about the trip when it happens in December.

Now I am 100% sure that my husband knows me so well  🙂

Instead of just being a birthday, this year also I am celebrating a birth week. I had a nice birthday lunch at work on Wednesday and they bought me Halloween themed cupcakes. They were so pretty and yummy as well.

Then the following day I went to lunch with another of my friends .Tonight my brother and his family are coming for dinner to celebrate my birthday as well so basically I am eating lots of food in the name of celebration. Scared to jump on the scale now  🙂

Another year older

I can’t believe I am another year older, it looks like time flies since I seem to remember talking about my pool party only a few months ago, or was that a year ago??

Birthday (35)

God I am loosing my memory already, I must indeed be old now 😉 :wizard::wizard: :wizard:

And it’s weird, the older I get, the younger I seem to feel. As my body ages, my mind and my spirit are pulling a Benjamin Button. Is it normal? :headbang::nutcase::woo:

Even after so many years, I am excited about my birthday like little kids and getting a cake, wishes and gifts makes me feel out of this world. I find myself feeling much younger than I am.  I suppose we all feel that way.  All I know, right now, today, is that I am happy.

Ten years ago, I thought I would have done and accomplished so much in life by this age but  I don’t have it together today. I thought that I would. But I don’t. In fact, the more I learn about myself and life, I believe that life is all about constant learning and the more that we learn, the more we realize we don’t know very much.

Birthday (4)

Looking back at my life, I am happy with it and hope to live the rest of my life surrounded by loved ones. So to celebrate life, I want to fill each day with something purposeful.  I’m so very fortunate to live where I want, with whom I want  and do what I want.

Halloween Birthday (37)

This year I decided that I am not going to have a big party like the last few years. All I want to do is to spend some quality time with my husband. We have plans to go for dinner tonight; will let you know details 🙂

It’s been a happy day so far with lots of texts, phone calls, Facebook posts from family and dear friends, wishing me a happy birthday. Hopefully rest of the day will follow suit.

If you are celebrating your birthday today, Happy Birthday fellow Scorpions 🙂
